The Universalia Society Active in 1990 - 1998 and its Sequence on the Universalia of First-Republic Era

Abstract:

Předmětem této práce je posouzení působnosti a návaznosti okultistické společnosti Universalia, působící na našem území v letech 1929-1940, a společností Universalia, která byla založena po sametové revoluci. Znovu založená společnost fungovala v letech 1990-1998. Oba uvedené spolky vydávaly časopis Logos, který byl hlavním nástrojem sebeprezentace Universalie a pomocí analýzy tohoto revue jsem se pokusila určit posun mezi oběma společnostmi. Na základě analýzy vyvstaly jisté kontrasty mezi společnostmi, na jejichž základě je možné jistý posun pozorovat. Ten spatřují především v samotném charakteru společnosti, kdy prvorepubliková Universalia fungovala zejména jako osvětový a vzdělávací spolek, zatímco obnovená společnost byla spíše klubem odborníků na hermetismus. Logos byl v případě prvorepublikové Universalie jakýmsi nástrojem výchovy a s jeho pomocí se společnost snažila získat a vzdělávat co nejširší počet zájemců. U obnovené společnosti Logos tyto aspirace nemá, společnost se nesnaží výrazně působit na veřejnosti a je zaměřena spíše na individuální duchovní rozvoj. Tyto změny se pak pokouším vysvětlit na základě teorie privatizace a individualizace náboženství Thomase Luckmana.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the examination of the activity and sequences of the occult society Universalia, which was active in our territory between the years 1929-1940, and the new Universalia society, which was re-established after the Velvet revolution. The renewed society was active from 1990 to 1998. Both of the listed societies were publishing the Logos magazine, which was the main instrument of their self-presentation. Through the use of analysis of this revue I tried to detect, expose or reveal the shift of both societies. The analysis results showed some contrast between two societies, that makes the base for observing the progress. I see the main progress mostly in the nature of the societies. The first Universalia society worked as edifying and educational association, while the re-established Universalia was more a club of hermeticism experts. In the case of the first-republic Universalia, Logos was an instrument of education and with its help the society tried to gain a wider range of the persons concerned and provide them better schooling. The new society´s Logos does not have these aspirations. The society does not try to influence the public, it is more concentrated on the individual spiritual development. This shift of the religion from public to private sphere is what I try to explain, using Thomas Luckman´s Privatisation and Individualisation of Religion theory.
