Pronuciation Errors in English Made by Czech Speakers

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo poskytnout všeobecný prehled základních jevu anglické fonetiky s vysvetlením onech jevu, prozkoumat casto se vyskytující chyby u ceských mluvcích a poskytnout ctenári prostredky, s nimiž muže tyto chyby eliminovat. Cílem výzkumu bylo zjistit akutální stav anglické výslovnosti u stredoškolských ucitelu Angličtiny. Autorem navrhované teze tvrdí, že práve stredškolští ucitelé mají znacný vliv na verbální schopnosti svých žáku. Dále je navrhováno, že jakákoliv chyba ve výslovnosti ucitele se prenese na žáka. Teoretická cást téte práce se zabývá segmentálními i suprasegmentálními jevy reci. Nejprve jsou probrány samohlásky a souhlásky. Ty z nich, které nejsou prítomné v Ceštine, ci které nejsou ceskému mluvcímu zjevné, jsou dukladne prozkoumány, je podán popis jejich vzniku a tam, kde je to možné, jsou též uvedena cvicení ke zlepšení diskutovaného fonému. Následuje kapitola, jež se zabývá výslvností slova v izolaci, jež vysvetluje základní vlastnosti, a to primární a sekundární prízvuk, výšku tónu, délku, kvalitu, hlasitost, elize. Nakonec jsou vysvetleny jednotlivé jevy mluvené reci. Cást zabývající se výzkumem podává jeho popis, nálezy a metodologii. I když souhrnný prehled výsledku ukazuje, že aktuální stav výslovnosti je nad prumerem, k dokonalosti má daleko. Vetný prízvuk a rytmus, -ing koncovky a neznelá dentální frikativa cinily pouze malé obtíže, a úcastníci výzkumu projevili presnost v rozlišování mezi /v/ a /w/. Nicméne, výsledky u ztráty znelosti finální souhlásky a u znelé dentální frikativy jsou pouze prumerné, a výsledky u spojování a asimilace jsou podprumerné. Výsledky výzkumu ukazují, že stredoškolští ucitelé Anglictiny si jsou vedomi pravidel anglické výslovnosti, a v mnoha prípadech jsou schopni je uplatnovat. Nicméne, stále je zde prostor pro zlepšení, zejména v oblastech kde výzkum zjistil prumerné až podprumerné dosažené skóre.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis was to provide a general overview of the basic features of the English phonetics with an explanation of those respective features, to examine the frequently occurring errors in pronunciation made by Czech speakers and to provide the reader with means to eliminate these errors. The aim of the research was to determine the contemporary condition of pronunciation of grammar school teachers of English. The proposed theory claims that grammar school English teachers have a substantial impact on their students´ oral skills. It further suggests that any error in pronuciation made by a teacher is likely to be transferred on the teacher´s student. In the Theoretical Section, both segmental and suprasegmental features of speech are examined. First, vowels and consonant are discussed. Those vowels and consonants that are not present in Czech or that are not obvious to a Czech speaker are closely examined, the description of their formation is given, and if possible, suggestion of an exercise is given to improve the pronunciation of the discussed phoneme. Second, the pronunciation of a word in isolation is explored, with its defining qualities explained, namely primary and secondary stress, pitch, duration, quality, loudness, elision. Finally, the aspects of connected speech are discussed and explained. The Research Section presents the research, its findings and methodology. While the general overview of the scores achieved by the participating teachers shows that the current state of affairs is above average, it is still far from perfect. The sentence stress and rhythm, -ing endings, voiceless dental fricative caused only little trouble, and the participants are quite consistent in distinguishing between /v/ and /w/. However, the items of final consonant devoicing and voiced dental fricative show only average scores and the outcome of linking is below the average. The results of the research show that grammar school teachers are aware of the English pronunciation rules and that on many occasions they are able to follow them. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement, especially in the areas of research that showed average or below the average performance.
