The influence of biotic and abiotic variables on microdistribution of an ostracod assemblage

Abstract:

As spring fens are biotopes with relatively stable conditions, biotic interactions could significantly affect the structure and distribution of both macro- and meiobenthic assemblages. However, the biotic relationships between these groups of organisms have only rarely been studied so far. It remains unknown to what extent predation and abiotic factors affect the microdistribution of ostracods in spring fens, and if an accumulation of empty shells could bias the results. This master's thesis is a continuation of my bachelor's thesis, in which a possible predator-prey relationship was indicated by the apparent limitation of ostracods by high abundances of invertebrate predators. Increasing the sample size more than two times (N=50), I tried to test the net and shared effects of invertebrate predators and available abiotic factors on the overall abundance and species composition of the ostracod assemblage in the mineral-rich and relatively homogeneous spring fen of Rakša. I performed the analyses separately for all ostracods as well as only for individuals living at the time of sampling, and for each taxon of predators and overall predator abundance. A simple experiment, examining the ability of predators such as Gammarus fossarum and representatives of the taxon Odonata to feed on ostracods, was included in the thesis as well. Altogether nine species of ostracods were found, Darwinula stevensoni and Pseudocandona rostrata being newly recorded in the spring fens of the Western Carpathians. For the species of Potamocypris villosa, two different morphotypes were found. About 56% of the ostracod taxocoenosis was formed by „living“ individuals. The effect of predators on the total number of Ostracoda or species composition was not statistically proven. However, the experiments showed that the amphipod crustacean G. fossarum is able to consume ostracods, but prefers other food. The dragonfly Cordulegaster sp. preferred larger ostracod species. Gradients of environmental variables explained 14.8% of the total variability, and after removing the effect of empty shells, the explained variability increased to 17.2%. Three abiotic gradients were significant: characteristics of the substrate surface, type of microhabitat and content of organic substances in the sediment, and average temperature. The aggregated occurrence of ostracods in the spring fen was only partially explained. The assemblage is probably affected by other mechanisms than those investigated in the thesis.

Prameništní slatiniště jsou biotopy s relativně stálými podmínkami prostředí, a proto by tu mohly mít biotické interakce zásadní vliv na strukturu a distribuci společenstev makrozoobentosu i meiozoobentosu. Avšak vztahy mezi těmito skupinami živočichů byly zatím zkoumány jen vzácně. Je otázkou, do jaké míry ovlivňuje mikrodistribuci lasturnatek na prameništích právě predace či abiotické podmínky a jaký je vliv kumulace prázdných schránek, které by mohly zkreslit výsledky. Tato diplomová práce úzce navazuje na bakalářskou práci, ve které se ukázala možná limitace lasturnatek pří vysokých abundancích bezobratlých predátorů, naznačující možný vztah predátor-kořist. Po víc než dvojnásobném navýšení vzorků (N=50) pocházejících z prameništního slatiniště Rakša, jsem se pokusila testovat čistý a sdílený vliv bezobratlých predátorů a dostupných abiotických faktorů na celkovou početnost a druhové složení společenstva lasturnatek. Tyto vztahy jsem se snažila najít zvlášť pro všechny lasturnatky i pouze pro jedince živé v čase odběru a pro jednotlivé taxony predátorů i celkovou abundanci predátorů. Součástí práce byl i jednoduchý experiment dokazující schopnost konzumace lasturnatek predátory Gammarus fossarum a zástupci taxonu Odonata. Byl popsaný výskyt 9 druhů lasturnatek, přičemž Darwinula stevensoni a Pseudocandona rostrata patří k novým druhům pro prameniště Západních Karpat. U druhu Potamocypris villosa byly zaznamenány dva rozdílné morfotypy. Nalezená taxocenóza byla tvořená z asi 56 % živými jedinci v čase odběru. Vliv predátorů na celkový počet lasturnatek a na druhové složení se nepodařilo statisticky prokázat. V experimentech se však potvrdilo, že ačkoli je blešivec G. fossarum schopný lasturnatky konzumovat, upřednostňuje jinou potravu. Vážky Cordulegaster sp. preferovaly větší druhy lasturnatek. Gradienty proměnných prostředí vysvětlily 14,8 % variability a po odstranění vlivu prázdných schránek se vysvětlená variabilita zvýšila na 17,2 %. Signifikantní byly 3 gradienty: vlastnosti povrchu substrátu, typ mikrohabitatu a obsah organických látek v sedimentu a průměrná teplota. Agregovaný výskyt lasturnatek se podařilo vysvětlit jen z malé části. Populaci na lokalitě pravděpodobně ovlivňují i jiné mechanizmy, než byly zkoumány v diplomové práci.
