"Not to Harmony or to Rationall Beauty": The Representation of Urban Space in E. E. Cummings' Complete Poems, 1904-1962 and Peter Ackroyd's Hawksmoor.

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá problematikou zobrazení městského prostoru v poezii E.E. Cummingse a v próze Petera Ackroyda, konkrétně v jeho nejznámějším románu Howksmoor. Ačkoliv je dílo těchto dvou autorů zřídka srovnáváno, tato práce ukazuje, že lze najít pro takovéto srovnání přesvědčivé důvody. Zevrubná analýza textu s využitím tzv. teorie prostoru ukazuje, že struktura městského prostoru má v těchto dílech mnoho společných rysů, ačkoliv je dělí tisíce kilometrů a několik desetiletí. Tyto společné prvky se však v textech nevyskytují náhodně, ale na základě jasně definovatelných důvodů. New York, jak ho ve svých básních popisuje E. E. Cummings, je tvořen několika místy v centru města, především na Manhattanu, a to v Greenwich Village a okolí. Nejdůležitějšími místy, která určují základní dynamiku světského versus posvátného prostoru, jsou Dick Mid’s Brothel, McSorley’s Pub a Hassan’s Place. Tyto lokace lze označit za jakési svatyně a brány mezi zónami nebe, země a podsvětí. Město samotné je zobrazeno jako erotizovaná žena – spasitelka, která prochází fázemi života Ježíše Krista a obětuje se pro obyvatele města, kteří zároveň tvoří její tělo. Stejně tak Londýn zobrazený v románu Hawksmoor je tvořen několika místy ve středu města, situovanými téměř výlučně na pravém břehu Temže. Je to sedm kostelů, které postavil architekt Nicholas Dyer a které slouží jako okultní svatyně odrážející rozmístění sedmi hvězd v Plejádách a jako brány v čase, prostoru nebo časoprostoru. Tyto brány jsou uvedeny do chodu řadou lidských obětí provedených architektem samotným, který za sebou úmyslně nechává stopy svých „zločinů“ spolu s napůl skrytými symboly a vzkazy pro ty, kdo jsou ochotní (a schopní) je rozšifrovat, pochopit a následovat jeho učení. Svým počínáním chce uniknout z okovů lidské existence, do kterých je lidstvo nevyhnutelně spoutáno časem, a ukázat vybrané skupině jedinců, jak toho dosáhnout. Dyer tak také vystupuje v pozici spasitele, který je díky vybudování svých sedmi kostelů přímo zodpovědný za organizaci prostoru. Jak v Cummingsově New Yorku, tak v Ackroydově Londýně je tak prostor organizován na základě posvátného vzorce, který je výsledkem kreativního zpracování křesťanské symboliky. Pro tuto organizaci prostoru je zásadních několik míst, která tvoří brány buď v čase, prostoru a časoprostoru, nebo mezi třemi zónami nebe, země a podsvětí. Původcem této organizace je v obou případech figura připomínající Krista. Z těchto společných rysů vyplývá, že ačkoliv E. E. Cummings a Peter Ackroyd jsou považováni za zástupce různých období (a proto i různých stylů), lze je oba označit za modernisty. Jejich styl je navíc specifickým druhem tradicionalistického a konzervativního modernismu. Modernisté obecně zaujímají k prostoru a času charakteristický postoj, ale tito dva autoři sdílejí ještě specifičtější typ modernistického prostoru – snaží se obnovit ztracený posvátný řád.

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with the issue of urban space in the poetry of E. E. Cummings and the prose of Peter Ackroyd, as represented in his best known novel, Hawksmoor. It shows that although the oeuvres of these two authors are rarely considered to be connected or similar in any way, there nevertheless is a good and academically sound reason to compare them. Through a close analysis of texts from the perspective of spatial theory, it identifies a deeply shared commonality in the structure of urban space that binds the analyzed texts together even over thousands of miles and several decades. More importantly, however, that commonality is shown not to have been caused by mere coincidence, but a set of well-definable reasons. The New York City that emerges from the poems of E. E. Cummings is made up of a limited set of inner-city sites, primarily in Manhattan, and most often in or around Greenwich Village. The central locations organizing the sacred vs profane dynamics of this city space are Dick Mid’s Brothel, McSorley’s Pub and Hassan’s Place. These act as temples and portals between the three zones of heaven, earth and underworld. The city itself, at the same time, appears as a female and eroticized savior, going through stages in the life of Jesus Christ, and sacrificing herself for the inhabitants of the city who at the same time constitute her body. The London that appears in Hawksmoor is likewise one made up of a selected set of locations in the center of the city, almost exclusively on the North Bank of the River Thames. The central locations in this case are the seven churches built by Nicholas Dyer that at the same time also function as occult temples mirroring the arrangement of the seven stars in the Pleiades and providing portals in time, space or space-time, according to the model used. These portals are made functional by a series of human sacrifices carried out by the architect himself who intentionally leaves traces of his “crimes” in combination with semi-hidden symbols and messages for those willing (and able) to read them, interpret them, and follow his teachings. His aim in this is to escape from the chains of human existence forced on humankind by the inevitable pressure of time and show a select group of enlightened people the way to do the same. Thus, he also appears as a savior-figure directly responsible for the arrangement of space through his activities as the builder of his seven churches. The parallelism of the organization of urban space can be seen in that both Cummings’ New York City and Ackroyd’s London have a sacred organization of space, appearing as a result of a creative reworking of Christian symbolism. These spaces then are organized around a limited set of heterotopic localities functioning as portals in time, space, space-time or the three zones of heaven, earth and underground, depending on the interpretive framework applied. Finally, the source of this kind of organization in both cases is a Christ-figure. The explanation for those common features is that although E. E. Cummings and Peter Ackroyd are considered as examples of two different periods (and thus also styles), they can both be taken as representatives of modernism, and a rather special kind at that: conservative, traditionalist modernists. While modernism has its very specific thinking about time and space, the special orientation shared by the two authors leads to an even more specific subtype of modernist space: one aiming at reconstructing an otherwise lost sacred order.
