Analysing operetta film cycle in 1930s Czechoslovakia: Adaptation, reception and production in the historical context

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on the cycle of operetta films that emerged in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s. Its aim is to analyze the adaptation, reception, and production of these films in their historical context. It follows the line of converting theatrical operetta plays into film format, with their success being enhanced by popular songs that were serially released on gramophone records. The main argument of the thesis is that the synergy of these three media causally influenced the success and sales of the texts across all media. This synergy should work mainly because the selected sample of films are adaptations of theater performances that premiered shortly before the film production, and their success was still resonating on theater stages. The thesis focuses on a sample of nine operetta films, which it defines as a cycle. Through the analysis of contemporary discourse and the poetics of individual works, it demonstrates that the efficiency of working with the specific patterns used in this cycle was successful in the context of the changing needs of the film industry.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca je zameraná na cyklus operetných filmov, ktoré vznikli v Československu v 30. rokoch 20. storočia. Cieľom je analyzovať adaptovanie, recepciu a produkciu týchto filmov v ich historickom kontexte. Sleduje líniu prevádzania divadelných operetných hier do filmovej podoby, pričom ich úspech bol umocnený populárnymi piesňami, ktoré boli sériovo vydávané na gramofónové platne. Hlavným argumentom práce je, že synergia týchto troch médií kauzálne ovplyvnila úspešnosť a predajnosť textu naprieč všetkými médiami. Táto synergia by mala fungovať hlavne preto, že vybraná vzorka filmov sú adaptácie divadelných predstavení, ktoré mali premiéru krátko pred filmovou produkciou, a ich úspech ešte stále rezonoval na divadelných scénach. Práca sa sústreďuje na vzorku deviatich operetných filmov, ktoré definuje ako cyklus. Za pomoci analýzy dobového diskurzu a poetiky jednotlivých diel dokazuje, že efektívnosť práce so špecifickými vzorcami použitými v tomto cykle bola úspešná v kontexte potrieb meniaceho sa filmového priemyslu.
