Pedro Calderón de la Barca and the Importance of Free Will and Honour in the Course of His Work

Abstract:

Pedro Calderón de la Barca represents the culmination of the Spanish Baroque theatre. His dramatic creation de facto means the end of the literary Baroque and also of the entire Spanish Golden Age. The aim of this work is to present the creation of such an eminent playwright (comprehensively, from beginning to end, and within particular thematic groups into which his work is divided), to focus especially on the issues of free will and honour which are very typical for his work, and to find out how their concepts change either due to time or a change of a type of drama. The first chapter of the theoretical part deals with the characteristics of the Spanish Golden Age; the second one is dedicated to the personality of Calderón, to his creation and topics; and the third one analyses the issues of free will and honour from two basic perspectives ? philosophical and religious. The practical part, comprised of six chapters, incorporates analyses of six individual works of Calderón, focused especially on the issues of free will and honour.

Pedro Calderón de la Barca představuje vyvrcholení španělského barokního dramatu. S koncem jeho dramatické tvorby de facto končí i literární baroko a s ním i celý španělský Zlatý věk. Cílem této práce je představit tvorbu tohoto významného dramatika (komplexně, od počátku do konce a v rámci jednotlivých tematických skupin, na které se jeho práce dělí), zaměřit se speciálně na problematiku svobodné vůle a cti, které jsou pro jeho dílo velmi typické, a zjistit, zda se jejich pojetí mění buď vlivem času nebo změnou typu dramatu. První kapitola teoretické části se zabývá charakteristikou španělského Zlatého věku, druhá se věnuje osobnosti Calderóna, jeho tvorbě a tematice obecně, a třetí rozebírá problematiku svobodné vůle a cti z dvou základních úhlů pohledu ? filozofického a náboženského. Praktická část, složená z šesti kapitol, představuje analýzu šesti jednotlivých Calderónových děl, právě se zaměřením na svobodnou vůli a čest.
