Tradičně bývaly venkovské oblasti spojovány se zemědělstvím, nikoli s průmyslem. Postupně se však identita rurálních regionů měnila a jejich původně dominantní zemědělská funkce byla nahrazena mnohem větší variabilitou funkcí. Development of rural areas has been traditionally associated with agriculture rather than manufacturing.
