Beauty In Ugliness

Abstract:

This thesis is created by an attempt to characterise mutual relationship between beauty and ugliness in focus on such artists' work where both are inherently present, and therefore complementing each other and heightening the impact of each. Featured artists were chosen based by analysing the development of social context which necessarily impacts the character of art in every given period. To discuss combination of beauty and ugliness would be impossible were it not for loosening of society's morale based on religious concept of good being equal with beauty and therefore the impossibility of beauty not being good. The single most important artist in quest to understand co-existence of beauty and ugliness is Charles Baudelaire, who was the first to speak of ugly topics whilst withholding from any moral judgement. The other artists crucial to this work are mostly painters, which is due to the uniqueness of Baudelaire's language affecting all of reader's senses. Some of the artists mentioned are almost forgotten nowadays, especially the artistic hub of former Weimar republic.

Abstract:

Práca vychádza z pokusu o vymedzenie vzájomného vzťahu medzi základnými estetickými kategóriami krásy a ošklivosti v tvorbe umelcov, kde sú obe inherentne prítomné a dopĺňajú sa na základe kontrastu zvyšujúceho pôsobivosť každej z nich. Uvedení umelci boli vybraní na základe analýzy vývoja spoločenskej situácie, ktorá nevyhnutne ovplyvňuje tvár umenia každého obdobia. Analyzované spojenie krásy a ošklivosti nemohlo existovať bez uvoľnenia spoločenskej morálky vychádzajúcej z náboženského chápania, že dobro musí byť krásne a krása nemôže byť zlá. Najvýznamnejším autorom pre pochopenie koexistencie krásy a ošklivosti je Charles Baudelaire, ktorý bol aj prvým, ktorý pri zobrazovaní škaredých predmetov nerobil automatické súdy o ich morálnom charaktere. Okrem neho práci dominujú hlavne maliari, tento fakt je daný unikátnosťou Baudelaireovho jazyka, ktorý pôsobí na všetky čitateľove zmysly. Niektorí z umelcov sú dnes už skoro zabudnutí, hlavne umelecké podhubie bývalej Weimarskej republiky.
