The Complex Nuclear Deterrence between India and Pakistan

Abstract:

Jaderné zbraně jsou nejničivější člověkem vytvořené prostředky na světě. Proto jejich akvizice Indií a Pákistánem vyvolala vzhledem k bezpečnostní nestabilitě v této oblasti pochybnosti o možnostech fungování nukleární deterrence mezi těmito státy. Přes geografickou blízkost obou zemí, četné ozbrojené střety v Jammu a Kašmíru a intenzivní násilný konflikt krátce po nabytí jaderného statutu však prozatím k jaderné válce nedošlo. Naskýtá se tak otázka, jaké má odstrašování mezi Indií a Pákistánem vlastně charakteristiky a jaké jsou důsledky přijatých strategií deterrence v regionu. Tato diplomová práce se soustředí na klíčové rysy odstrašování mezi oběma státy s důrazem na motivace a očekávání, které k provedení jaderných testů vedly, na přijaté nukleární doktríny, vztah mezi konvenčními střety a jaderným odstrašováním a také protiraketovou obranu.

Abstract:

Nuclear weapons are man-made objects with the greatest destructive capacity in the world. That is also why their acquisition by India and Pakistan became a matter of a particular concern with regard to the almost constant security instability in the region. It seemed debatable whether nuclear deterrence could actually work between these countries. However, despite their geographical proximity, numerous violent incidents, and a serious armed conflict shortly after they gained the nuclear status, the option of nuclear war has not been pursued so far. This raises questions about the key features of deterrence in the region and the effects that emerge as a result. This thesis is focused on crucial attributes of deterrence between India and Pakistan, including the motives and expectations which led the countries to acquire nuclear weapons in the first place, nuclear doctrines they adopted, the relation between low intensity conflicts and nuclear deterrence, and also the Indian missile defence system.
