Milk controversy: Eating regulations in the Hare Krishna movement

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá problémem regulace stravování v Hnutí Haré Kršna. Konkrétně otázkami, které v mimoindickém prostředí vyvolává konzumace mléka jako předepsané potraviny oddaného. Na rozdíl od ostatních prací z oblasti společenských dějin hnutí Haré Kršna se zaměřuje na diskuse související s apelem na přechod k veganství, které podle některých oddaných je etičtější než vegetariánství. Podle jiných oddaných, zejména členů nejrozšířenější organizace ISKCON, je však veganství nepřijatelné z důvodů nenahraditelnosti požívání mléka v rámci tradice. Na pozadí debat mezi oddanými Kršny o vhodnosti konzumace mléka v kontextu naplňování principu ahinsa pak lze sledovat jednu z možných podob procesu akulturace indických tradic v prostředí kultury mimo oblast jejich vzniku. Debaty mezi veganskými a neveganskými oddanými Kršny a jejich dopady na každodenní praxi budou studovány na datech z internetových diskusí, rozhovorů s oddanými a zúčastněného pozorování při situacích spojených s jídlem, které budou analyzovány pomocí vybraných kvalitativních metod.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to describe issue of food regulation in the Haré Krishna Movement. Specifically, issues that in the environment out of India cause the consumption of milk as the prescribed food of the devotee. Contrary to other works in the field of social history of Haré Krsna, thesis focuses on discussions related to the call to go vegan, which, according to some devotees, is more ethical than vegetarianism. However, according to other devotees, especially members of the most widespread ISKCON organization, vegans are unacceptable because of the irreplaceable use of milk in the tradition. Against the backdrop of the debate between devotees of Krishna about the suitability of milk consumption in the context of the fulfillment of the ahinsa principle, one can look at one of the possible forms of the process of acculturation of Indian traditions in a culture outside their area of origin. Debates between the vegan and non-vegan Krishna devotees and their impact on everyday practice will be studied on data from online discussions, interviews with devotees, and participative observation in food-related situations that will be analyzed using selected qualitative research methods.
