Analysis of problem solving data

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat záznamy o postupu řešení logických úloh ze systému Problem Solving Tutor a pokusit se najít způsob, jak výsledky využít pro poskytování automatizované zpětné vazby. Tyto analýzy jsou provedeny pro hry Rozbitá kalkulačka a Binární křížovka. Na základě historických uživatelských dat je v práci vytvořen stavový systém řešení a je ověřena možnost využití tohoto systému pro poskytování nápověd. Výsledky ukazují schopnost napovídat ve více než 80 % případů. Součástí této práce je také návrh a implementace simulátorů obou her. Tyto simulátory využívají stavový systém a na jeho základě automaticky poskytují kontextovou nápovědu. Dále jsou v práci provedeny analýzy vlastností a času řešení obou her. Práce též shrnuje relevantní výzkumy v tomto oboru.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to analyze steps used in recorded attempts to solve logical tasks in Problem Solving Tutor, and endeavours to find a way to utilize the results of this analysis in providing automated feedback. The analysis was carried out on the games Broken calculator and Binary crossword. For the purpose of this thesis a state system based on historical user data was created. It was verified that this system is able to provide hints in more than 80 percent of cases. The thesis includes design and implementation of simulators of both games. These simulators use the state system and on its basis automatically provide contextual hints. Analyses of characteristics and solving times of both games were performed as a part of the thesis. The thesis also sums up the relevant research in this area.
