Obcenity in Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer (1934) and William Burroughs' Naked Lunch (1959)

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis compares and analyses Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer (1934) and William Burroughs' Naked Lunch (1959) on the basis of obscenity as a significant element of their work. In these texts, both authors revolt against the uniformity of modernity's consumption. Miller and Burroughs indicate the spreading automatisms and indifference in modern society and modern souls which they compare to the proliferation of the "cancer." The aim of this thesis is to prove the importance of obscenity as an artistic technique by which both authors confront the readers with the "cancer" of modernity and awake them from inertia.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce porovnává a analyzuje Obratník raka Henryho Millera (1934) a Nahý oběd (1959) Williama Burroughse na základě obscénnosti jako jednoho ze zásadních rysů tvorby obou autorů. Oba autoři se v těchto dílech vymezují proti uniformitě moderní společnosti konzumu. Miller a Burroughs upozorňují na šířící se automatismy a netečnost moderní společnosti, které pronikají až do nitra moderního člověka a připomínají množení rakovinných buněk. Cílem této práce je prokázat důležitost obscénnosti jako umělecké techniky, kterou oba autoři konfrontují čtenáře s "rakovinou" modernity a probouzí je z nečinnosti.
