Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá komparativní analýzou díla současné americké básnířky, spisovatelky a aktivistky Alice Walker a amerického esejisty Scotta Russella Sanderse v kontextu ekokritického přístupu k literatuře. Obě vybraná díla byla napsána v souvislosti s nespokojeností s vývojem současné americké společnosti a kladou si za cíl hledat odpovědi na otázku, jaká naděje čeká budoucí generace. Sbírka poesie Absolute Trust in the Goodness of the Earth z r. 2003 a sbírka esejí Hunting for Hope z r. 1998 nabízejí řadu kontemplativních témat provokujících čtenáře k reflexi, dalšímu studiu a hledání možných řešení. Tato práce si klade za úkol analyzovat myšlenkové procesy jednotlivých autorů a na jejich základě poukázat na koncept přírodních cyklů lidské existence, který probíhá napříč filozofií obou autorů. Klíčová témata, na něž se tato práce zaměřuje, jsou smíření se s minulostí, uzdravující síla tvůrčího psaní a návrat ke kořenům. Výsledkem této práce je poukázat na cyklické pojetí interpretace, symbiózu lidského působení ve vztahu k živé i neživé přírodě, cestu k celostnímu pojetí světa, podobně jako odosobněné pojetí spirituality, ke kterému oba autoři odkazují. I přes velmi odlišný původ obou spisovatelů a různé okolnosti vzniku výše zmíněných děl, je možno říci, že obě díla sdílejí podobnou vizi ekologicky trvale udržitelného rozvoje společnosti, využívání přírodních zdrojů a změn spotřebitelského chování amerických občanů k zodpovědnějšímu a střídmějšímu charakteru. Kromě zobrazování konkrétních problémů současné americké společnosti, je zde i výzva k osobní transformaci a duchovní obrodě. Obě díla tak přesahují význam regionální a stávají se velmi aktuální výzvou pro současného čtenáře v globálním měřítku. V neposlední řadě má tato práce za cíl přiblížit alespoň části díla Scotta Russella Sanderse a poezie Alice Walker, jež jsou pro českého čtenáře dosud poměrně málo známé.

Abstract:

This Bachelor’s Diploma Thesis is dedicated to a comparative analysis of the works of Alice Walker, a contemporary poet, writer and an activist, and Scott Russell Sanders, a contemporary American essay writer, in the context of ecocritical approach to literature. The two selected works have both been written as a reaction to the developments in contemporary American society with the aim to seek answers whether there is hope for the future generations. The 1998 collection of essays Hunting for Hope by Sanders and the 2003 collection of poems Absolute Trust in the Goodness of the Earth by Walker offer a series of contemplative topics urging the reader to reflect, learn, and seek further solutions. The task of this thesis is to thematically analyse the thought processes of the individual authors and examine the concept of going back to natural cycles of human existence underlying their philosophies. The key themes emphasized in this thesis are reconciliation with the past, the healing power of writing, and re-connecting with one’s roots. This thesis should conclusively establish that within the ecocritical approach to literature both works have features of the non-linear concept of interpretation, the nonhuman-human relationship, the zest for universal wholeness, as well as a non-dualistic spirituality both authors subscribe to. Despite the different background and circumstances for their writing, they both share a similar vision of a healthy sustainable society. Apart from the rational descriptions of the problems in contemporary American society, there is a strong appeal for transformation and spiritual growth on a personal level. Hence the impact on the reader ranges between effective and affective. This thesis should also illustrate at least a part of Sanders’ work and Walker’s poetry to the Czech contemporary reader, to whom these works might be largely unknown.
