Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na dekoraci a proměny kostela sv. Demetria v Soluni před a po požáru roku 1917. Po úvodu je vymezen prostor na kritiku pramenů a literatury. V úvodní kapitole je čtenář seznámen s historií města Soluně, ve které se kult sv. Demetria rozvíjel nejvýrazněji. Prostor je věnován také problematice o původu světce vycházející z nejasnosti pramenů. Jedna z kapitol je věnována také historii kostela, aby pomohla nastínit jeho význam. Následuje architektonický popis s podkapitolou o kapli sv. Euthymia, který je neopomenutelnou součástí kostela, ale zároveň samostatnou jednotkou, která je unikátní svou koncepcí i historií, jež ikonograficky doplňuje kostel sv. Demetria. Druhá část se věnuje požáru roku 1917, jež měl zásadní vliv na současnou podobu kostela, ale i Soluně. Tuto část uvádí kapitola se zaměřením na politickou situaci před požárem, tj. období 1. světové války, které doprovázelo i zastaralé urbanistické řešení města, jež brzdilo jeho pokrok. Následující kapitoly se zabývají průběhem požáru, urbanistickým plánováním města a rekonstrukcí kostela, která se stala složitou v důsledku událostí druhé světové války. Mozaikám a nástěnným malbám jsou věnovány poslední kapitoly 3 a 4, přičemž kapitola s nástěnnými malbami je zásadně kratší z důvodu jejich nízké četnosti. K řešení tohoto tématu byla nezbytná práce s literaturou a archivními fotografiemi. Přínosná byla také osobní návštěva kostela, jež mi umožnila pořídit vlastní fotodokumentaci, díky které jsem mohla lépe porovnat současný stav se stavem před požárem z dobových fotografií. V literatuře mi byla přínosná především zahraniční literatura, jelikož se v českém jazyce tímto tématem doposud nikdo nezabýval. Provedeným výzkumem jsem zjistila, že kostel prošel několika zásadními proměnami. Nejstarším zásahem byl požár v 7. stol., po kterém byl kostel rozšířen o dvě další lodě a doplněn o nové mozaiky na východních pilířích. Proběhla také nedůsledná rekonstrukce votivních mozaik v severní vnitřní lodi, která byla viditelná v rozdílné kvalitě mezi horní a dolní polovinou. Tyto mozaiky lze dnes pozorovat díky sbírkám dochovaných černobílých fotografií a velmi věrohodným akvarelům od Waltera George, jelikož originální mozaiky byly zničeny požárem roku 1917. Podrobná a kvalitní fotodokumentace kostela společně s akvarely vznikla při jejich znovuobjevení v roce 1908. Celý kostel byl totiž za osmanské nadvlády přestavěn na mešitu a stěny byly omítnuty, aby nebyly v rozporu s ikonografií muslimského náboženství. Jejich znovuobjevení přitáhlo mnoho pozornosti ze stran historiků, archeologů a historiků umění, v nichž tento nový objev vzbuzoval mnoho neobjasněných otázek. Hlavní zjištění se týká především současného stavu kostela, který po požáru prošel radikální proměnou. Z architektonického hlediska si udržel předešlou koncepci, avšak z dekorativní stránky silně utrpěl. Hlavice sloupů, jež tvoří část sochařské výzdoby, byly obnoveny na základě fotografií a zachovalých částí. Originály jsou dnes uloženy v muzeích, včetně několika fragmentů mozaik. Dekorativní výzdoba z kostela téměř vymizela. Požár přežily pouze mozaiky na východních pilířích a západní stěně. Nástěnné malby najdeme na stěně jižní boční lodi a na jižních pilířích. Všechny jsou dochovány ve velmi špatném stavu. Interiér kostela se stal po požáru velmi prázdný.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis focuses on the decoration and transformations of the church of St. Demetrius in Thessaloniki after the fire of 1917. The introduction is succeeded by a critique of the sources and literature. In the opening chapter, the reader is introduced to the history of the city of Thessaloniki, in which the cult of saint developed most prominently. The space is also defined to the issue of the origin of the saint based on the vagueness of the sources. A chapter is also devoted to the history of the church to help outline its significance. This is followed by an architectural description with a subsection on the chapel of St. Euthymius, which is an important part of the church, but at the same time a separate unit, unique in its concept and history, which iconographically complements the church of St. Demetrius. The second part is devoted to the fire of 1917, which had a major impact on the current form of the church, but also on Thessaloniki. This part is introduced by a chapter focusing on the political situation before the fire, i.e. the period of the First World War, which was also accompanied by an outdated urban design of the city, which hindered its progress. The following chapters are focused on the fire, city planning and the reconstruction of the church, which was complicated mainly by the Second World War. The last chapters, 3 and 4, are devoted to mosaics and wall paintings, with the chapter on wall paintings being fundamentally shorter due to their low frequency. To better understand this topic, work with literature and archival photographs was necessary. A personal visit to the church was also beneficial, which allowed me to take my own photo documentation, thanks to which I could better compare the current state with the state before the fire though period photographs. In terms of literature, foreign literature was particularly beneficial to me, as no one had dealt with this topic in the Czech language until now. Through my research, I found out that the church went through several major changes. The oldest intervention was due to a fire, after which the church was expanded by two more naves and supplemented with new mosaics on the eastern pillars. There was also an inconsistent reconstruction of the votive mosaics in the northern inner nave, which was evident in the varying quality between the upper and lower halves. These mosaics can be seen today thanks to collections of preserved black and white photographs and very reliable watercolors by Walter George, as the original mosaics were destroyed by fire in 1917. The detailed and high-quality photo documentation of the church together with the watercolors can be explained by archaeological discoveries in 1908. The whole church was rebuilt as a mosque under Ottoman rule and the walls were plastered so as not to conflict with the iconography of the Muslim religion. Their rediscovery attracted a lot of attention from historians, archaeologists and art historians, to whom this new discovery raised many unexplained questions. The main findings relate primarily to the current state of the church, which underwent a radical transformation after the fire. From an architectural point of view, the previous concept was maintained, but suffered greatly on the decorative side. The capitals of the columns, which form part of the sculptural decoration, were restored on the basis of photographs and preserved parts. Today, the originals are kept in museums, including several mosaic fragments. The decorative elements of the church has almost disappeared. Only the mosaics on the eastern pillars and the western wall survived the fire. Murals can be found on the wall of the south aisle and on the south pillars. They are all preserved in very poor condition. The interior of the church became very empty after the fire.
