Significant personality of European cinema - Tom Tykwer

Abstract:

Cílem práce je představit jednu z významných osobností evropské kinematografie. Německý filmový režisér Tom Tykwer se proslavil světovým hitem Lola běží o život, v německém originále Lola rennt. V první části práce se zabývám popisem kinematografie jako oboru umění. Uvádím zde aspekty, ze kterých je možné na kinematografii nahlížet a podrobněji ji studovat. Zejména se jedná o estetickou, technologickou, ekonomickou a společenskou stránku filmového průmyslu a jeho produktů. V závěru této části hodnotím postavení kinematografie vzhledem k jejímu vlivu na společnost na přelomu dvacátého a jednadvacátého století. V druhé části popisuji situaci v německé kinematografii druhé poloviny dvacátého století. Rozlišuji tuto éru na období šedesátých až osmdesátých let a období kinematografie po sjednocení Německa. Podrobněji se věnuji pouze několika vybraným osobnostem, jmenovitě se jedná o Wima Wenderse, Rolanda Emmericha a Toma Tykwera. Další část obsahuje kompletní Tykwerovu filmografii s popisem základních charakteristik jeho děl. Analyzuji dva nejznámější Tykwerovy filmy Lola běží o život a Parfém: příběh vraha. Je zřejmé, že Tykwer má tendenci zvýrazňovat náhodu jako hlavní hnací silu lidských osudů. Pro Tykwera není náhoda jev bez příčiny, často se snaží ve svých filmech dopátrat původní příčinu v událostech, které se vztahují k náhodným jevům skrze složitý řetězec příčin a následků. Tykwer obvykle používá symboly k prohloubení atmosfér obrazu , to je evidentní ve filmu Lola běží o život a plně využito v adaptaci nejpopulárnější knihy německého spisovatele Patricka Süskinda Parfém: Příběh vraha. Přestože se Tykwer stal režisérem světového formátu, zůstává věrný německého filmu podporou mladých německých umělců a německých herců přes jeho produkční společnost X Filme Creative Pool.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to introduce Tom Tykwer as a significant personality of contemporary European cinema. The German director became famous for his worldwide hit named Run Lola Run - Lola rennt in the original German language. The first part deals with the description of cinema as an art and mentions aspects by which cinema can be studied in detail. In particular it describes the history of cinema from the aesthetic, technological, economic and social perspective. At the end of this section the thesis evaluates the status of cinema according to its impact on modern human society. The second part describes the situation in German cinema in the second half of the twentieth century. It distinguishes this era to period of New German Cinema in the seventies and eighties and the period of German cinema in the nineties following the unification of Germany. A few selected directors are described in detail, namely Wim Wenders, Roland Emmerich and in particular Tom Tykwer. The next section describes complete Tykwer´s filmography, including the main characteristics of the movies. In an analysis of his two most famous films Run Lola Run and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer I point out common characteristics of Tykwer´s work. It is evident in both films that Tykwer tends to highlight coincidence as the main driving force in human destinies. For Tykwer the coincidence is not phenomenon without a cause, often it is found originating in events that are related to the random phenomenon via a complicated chain of causes and effects. Tykwer usually uses symbols to enhance the picture atmosphere, it is evident in Run Lola Run and fully exploited in his adaptation of the most popular book of German writer Patrick Süskind Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. Although Tykwer achieved worldwide success he remains faithful to the German cinema by supporting young German artists and German actors via his production company X Filme Creative Pool.
