Impact of Factors Involved in the Early Spread of the Isiac Cults Across the Aegean Sea: A Quantitative Evaluation

Abstract:

Během prvních staletí vlády dynastie Ptolemaiovců v Egyptě, což je v této práci vymezeno jako období mezi koncem 4. století př. n. l. a druhou polovinou 2. Století př. n. l., se kulty spojené s božským párem Ísidy a Sarápida (i.e. isidovské kulty) úspěšně šířily do přístavních oblastí starověkého Středomoří. Moderní badatelé, kteří se na toto téma soustředí, se domnívají, že za úspěchem ranného rozšíření těchto kultů stálo mnoho faktorů z politických, ekonomických, nebo sociálních sfér. Hypotézy těchto badatelů nacházejí oporu v dochovaných historických zdrojích. Ptolemaiovský Egypt měl silnou ekonomiku a patřil mezi hlavní vývozce obilí ve starověkém Středomoří. Ísis a Sarápis byla univerzalistická božstva, jejichž kulty byly pevně spjaty s ptolemaiovskými vladaři, kteří byli v oblasti Středomoří velmi politicky aktivní. Ptolemaiovci se účastnili několika válek a po určitou dobu přímo kontrolovali některé středomořské regiony. Tyto skutečnosti umožňují identifikovat kanály, kterými se kulty bohyně Ísidy a boha Sarápida mohly potenciálně šířit. Nicméně otázka, které faktory měly větší dopad než jiné na proces ranného šíření isidovských kultů, je v akademické diskuzi stále nezodpovězena. Tato práce přistupuje k tématu ranného šíření isidovských kultů s předpokladem, že je současný stav bádání v této oblasti limitován možnostmi obvyklých metod historiografie. Tato práce se pokouší tyto limity překonat tak, že obohacuje tradiční metody historiografie o inovativní kvantitativní metody z dalších vědeckých disciplín. Konkrétně se jedná o matematické modelování, geografické modelování a prostorovou síťovou analýzu. Hlavním cílem této práce je kvantitativně vyhodnotit potenciální dopady jednotlivých faktorů v procesu ranného šíření isidovských kultů. Avšak kombinace faktorů šíření, jejich dopady a vzájemné interakce se mohly zásadně lišit v jednotlivých regionech starověkého Středomoří. Z toho důvodu se práce zaměřuje výhradně na šíření isidovských kultů v regionu Egejského moře, protože tento region byl signifikantně zapojen do politických a ekonomických aktivit Ptolemaiovců.

Abstract:

During the early reign of the Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt, which is defined in the thesis as the period between the end of the 4th century BCE and the second half of the 2nd century BCE, the cults related to the divine couple of Isis and Sarapis (i.e. the Isiac cults) spread successfully to ports in the ancient Mediterranean. Modern researchers focusing on the topic claim that the early spread of these cults was influenced by multiple factors from political, economic or social spheres. These hypotheses find partial support in the historical evidence. Ptolemaic Egypt had a powerful economy and was one of the main exporters of grain in the ancient Mediterranean. Isis and Sarapis were universalistic deities closely tied with the Ptolemaic rulers. Ptolemies were also very politically active in the Mediterranean region. They engaged in several military conflicts and for a time controlled some of the Mediterranean regions. Thus, it is possible to identify channels through which these cults could have been potentially spread. However, the question of which factors had more impact than others in the process of the early spread of these cults is still unresolved in the academic discussion. This thesis works with the premise that the current state of research on the topic of the early spread of the Isiac cults is approaching the limits of the established historiographical methods. The thesis attempts to overcome these limits by supplementing the traditional methodological apparatus of historiography by using innovative quantitative methods from other disciplines such as mathematical modeling, geospatial modeling, and spatial network analysis. The main goal of this thesis is to quantitatively evaluate the potential impact of individual factors in the process of the early spread of the Isiac cults. However, the combination of factors of the spread, their individual impact and mutual interplay could have varied significantly in different regions of the ancient Mediterranean. Therefore, the thesis focuses on the specific situation of the early spread of the Isiac cults in the ancient Aegean Sea region because this region was dramatically influenced by both political and economic activities of the Ptolemaic dynasty.
