Dark Romanticism

Abstract:

Cílem diplomní práce je analýza a interpretace černého romantismu v polském prostředí. Centrem pozornosti budou emblematická díla vybraných autorů literárních uskupení známých jako Ukrajinská škola (Antoni Malczewski, Seweryn Goszczyński) a Cyganeria Warszawska (Roman Zmorski). V první části představuji pojem romantismus spolu s jeho definicí, vývojem, hlavními představiteli a historickým kontextem, přičemž vymezím speciální prostor pro polské prostředí. Poté následuje kapitola popisující polský černý romantismus, kde využiji aktuálních vědeckých prácí převážně v polském jazyce a určím základní charakteristiku tohoto svébytného žánru, typizaci hrdiny, prostředí i vztahu autora k dílu, nevyjímaje ani informace o jeho vzniku a předchůdcích. V analytické části se zaměřím na rozbor ikonickývh černo-romantických děl na pozadí životních osudů autorů a literárních uskupení, v nichž byly psány. Zkoumám typickou silně pesimistickou atmosféru textů umístěnou v temném prostředí, dále prvky zla a metafyzična, většinově svázaných se slovanským folklorem nebo soudobými literárními, ideovými i filozofickými vlivy.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to analyse and interpret Dark Romanticism in the Polish context. The focus is on emblematic works by selected authors from literary groups known as the Ukrainian School (Antoni Malczewski, Seweryn Goszczyński) and the Warsaw Cyganeria (Roman Zmorski). In the first part, I introduce the concept of Romanticism along with its definition, development, main representatives and historical context, devoting special attention to the Polish context. This is followed by a chapter describing Polish Dark Romanticism, where I make use of recent scholarly works, mostly in Polish, and identify the basic characteristics of this distinctive genre, typifying the hero, the setting and the author's relationship to the work, in addition to information about its origins and predecessors. In the analytical section, I will focus on iconic dark romantic works with regard to the background of the authors' lives and the literary groups where they were written. I examine the typically deeply pessimistic atmosphere of the texts, set in a dark environment, as well as elements of evil and metaphysics which are mostly tied to Slavic folklore or contemporary literary, ideological, and philosophical influences.
