Feminist Features in Fairy Tale Rewritings by Angela Carter and Emma Donoghue

Abstract:

Tématem této práce je zobrazení ženských stereotypů ve třech klasických pohádkách „Kráska a zvíře“, „Sněhurka“ a „Spící krasavice“ a feministických verzích těchto tří pohádek ve sbírkách The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories (v češtině vyšlo pod názvem Krvavá komnata) od Angely Carter a Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins od Emmy Donoghue. Feministická hnutí sebou přinesla změny v mnoha oblastech včetně pohledu na literaturu a na její interpretaci. Jednou z těchto změn v interpretaci literatury je změna vnímání vyobrazení žen v tradičních pohádkách, které je v mnoha formách relevantní dodnes. Cílem práce je prozkoumat, jakým způsobem jsou ženské postavy zobrazeny ve feministických převyprávěních těchto tří pohádek, v již zmíněných dvou feministických sbírkách, v porovnání s tradičními verzemi těchto pohádek a jakým způsobem autorky tyto stereotypy využívají ke kritice patriarchálního odkazu pohádek.

Abstract:

This Master’s Diploma thesis focuses on the depiction of female stereotypes in three fairy tales “The Beauty and the Beast”, “Little Snow-White” and “The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood” and the feminist versions of these tales in The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter and Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins by Emma Donoghue. The feminist movements brought about many changes including a change in the views on literature and its interpretation. One of the changes in the interpretation of literature is the shift in the perception of the portrayal of female characters in traditional fairy tales, which is still in many ways relevant today. The aim of this thesis is to analyse how female characters are portrayed in the feminist rewritings of the three fairy tales in the two aforementioned feminist collections in comparison to the traditional versions of these tales and how the two authors use the stereotypes to criticise the patriarchal message of fairy tales.
