New historicism in practice

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá hlavními metodologickými postupy Nového historismu vzniklého v americkém prostředí počátkem třicátých let 20. století. Vychází z prací hlavního představitele a zakladatele Nového historismu Stephena Greenblatta. Opírá se hlavně o knihu William Shakespeare : velký příběh neznámého muže a Practicing New Historicism. Obecné informace o Novém historismu vychází z knihy Vladimíra Papouška Kritické úvahy o západní literární teorii. Snaží se vystihnout hranice mezi beletristickými a historiografickými pracemi a vybrat práce, jež lze považovat za historické. Praktická část se snaží poukázat na mimoliterární vlivy a autorovy zkušenosti při psaní díla. Zabývá se texty, jež pro svoji práci Novohistorikové používají, a jakým způsobem se díla stávají kanonickými. Cílem této práce je snaha vystihnout nejvýraznější metodologické postupy Nového historismu a uvést je do kontextu s literárními díly.

Abstract:

This work is dealing with the main methodological procedures of New Historicism, which came into existence in American environment during the Thirties of the 20th century. The most significant sources for this work were the books by Stephen Greenblatt, the main representative and founder of New Historicism. In particular it is based on the books William Shakespeare: Will in the World and Practicing New Historicism. The general information on New Historicism comes from the book of Vladimír Papoušek Critical Reflections on Western Literary Theory. This book attempts to describe the borders between historical fictions and historiographical works. It also selects the works that could be considered as historical ones. The practical part attempts to point out the non-literary influences and author’s experiences with the book writing. It shows and discusses the texts, which were most frequently used by the New Historians and the way these works become canonical. The main aim of this work was to show the most significant methodological procedures of New Historicism and connect them into the context of literary works.
