Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: An Attempt at a Quantitative Analysis in Various Contexts

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce se pokouší o komplexní, kvantitativně orientovaný rozbor Pána Gawaina a Zeleného rytíře, výjimečné básnické skladby z konce 14. století. Pán Gawain je zařazen do několika široce pojatých kontextů, které - vedle obvyklé konfrontace s původní aliterační tvorbou anglosaskou ? tvoří prestižní díla anglického písemnictví, či evropská epická a lyrická produkce; v těchto kontextech, jež jsou vždy vybírány s ohledem na prováděný výzkum, je báseň podrobena komparační početní analýze, která je postavena jednak na metodologii již ozkoušené ? příkladně v oblasti průzkumu slovního bohatství, aktivity a deskriptivity, či nominality ?, jednak na nově vypracovaném systému měření aliterace, svérázného básnického prostředku zkoumané skladby. Základním cílem textu je zakotvit na základě kvantitativních poměrů ve vybraných vzorcích Pána Gawaina v kontextu anglické a evropské literární tradice a ověřit funkčnosti zvolených metod v praktickém jazykovém výzkumu; vedlejším produktem těchto snah je pak formulace některých obecných vývojových zákonitostí literárního textu, které jsou v práci předloženy jako hypotézy k dalšímu zkoumání.

Abstract:

The present dissertation attempts at a complex, quantitatively-oriented analysis of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, an exceptional poetic composition of the late 1400s. Sir Gawain is put into several wide-scope contexts, which - besides the traditional confrontation with the original, Anglo-Saxon alliterative poetry ? are formed by crucial works of English literature, or by European epical and lyrical productions; in these contexts, the choice of which always depends upon the carried-out research, the poem is submitted to a comparative quantitative analysis, which is based both upon the deep-rooted methodology ? e.g., in the area of vocabulary richness, activity and descriptiveness, or nominality ?, and upon the freshly designed system of alliterative measurement, investigating the idiosyncratic poetic device of the composition. The chief goal of the paper is to anchor Sir Gawain in the contexts of English and European literary traditions on the basis of the quantitative situations in the given samples, and to verify the functioning of the selected methods in practical language research; a by-product of these endeavours is a formulation of some general development tendencies of literary texts, which are presented in the dissertation as hypotheses to be studied further.
