Enzymes represent a potential alternative to chemical synthesis due to their high selectivities and rapid catalysis under ambient reaction conditions. Nevertheless, synthetic chemists have been reluctant to employ enzymes as catalysts, because it was believed that enzymes are only active in aqueous media.
