Literary Images of the Colonies: Narrations and Counter-Narrations From the End of the Imperial Dream to the Sixties

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to analyse the literary representations of the colonies in the period from the loss of the Italian colonies (1941-1943) to the early Sixties, when the Italian administration of the trust territories in Somalia came to an end (1960). The literary works analysed in this study are Mohamed divorzia (1944) by Paolo Cesarini, Tempo di uccidere (1947) by Ennio Flaiano, Il libro della Libia (1945) and Il deserto della Libia (1952) by Mario Tobino, Settimana nera (1961) by Enrico Emanuelli. First of all, we briefly describe the historical context and the Italian colonial imaginary. Then the texts are investigated according to an interdisciplinary approach which takes into account the theoretical contributions of post-colonial studies, the works of F. Fanon and É. Glissant, and the historiographical research. The analysis focuses on the representation of both geographical and anthropological alterity, the identity crisis of the subject in Western culture, and the consequent rise of sickness and insanity, the image of colonialism and neocolonialism in the works of the above-mentioned authors. The texts are interpreted not only in relation to the Orientalistic tradition, but also to the hegemonic narration and the absolving rhetoric about colonialism in the Republican Italy.

Cílem, který si klade tato práce, je analýza literárních zobrazení italských kolonií v historickém období od ztráty vlastních kolonií (1941-1943) do počátku 60.let, kdy končí i italská poručenská správa v Somálsku (1960). Analyzovanými literárními díly jsou Mohamed divorzia (1944) Paola Cesariniho, Tempo di uccidere (1947) Ennia Flaiana, Il libro della Libia (1945) a následující Il deserto della Libia (1952) Maria Tobina a Settimana nera (1961) Enrica Emanuelliho. První část práce synteticky charakterizuje historický kontext a koloniální imaginaci Italů, v další části práce jsou jednotlivé texty zkoumány z interdisciplinární perspektivy, která přihlíží k teoretickým přínosům postkoloniálních studií, k úvahám autorů, jakými jsou F. Fanon a É. Glissant, a k výsledkům soudobého historiografického bádání. Aspekty, kterými jsem se hlouběji zabývala ve své analýze, jsou zobrazení jinakosti, a to jak geografické, tak i antropologické, krize identity západního subjektu, jejímiž nedílnými projevy jsou nemoc a šílenství, a zobrazení kolonialismu a neokolonialismu v dílech výše uvedených autorů. Texty byly interpretovány nejen s přihlédnutím k tradici orientalismu, ale i k hegemonní naraci a vyviňující rétorice minimalizující italský kolonialismus, která se stala vlastní poválečné Italské republice.
