The Failure of Canadian Nationalism: Interpretting Canadian National Identity through a Modified Lens of Imagined Communities

Abstract:

Kanada se okolnímu světu vysvětluje složitě. Někteří lidé zastávají názor, že Kanada, kvůli provincii Québec, je multinárodním státem, v němž žijí alespoň dva národy. Jiní by ale namítli, že jelikož Kanada získala plnou nezávislost od Spojeného království až v roce 1982, kanadská kultura je (nebo by měla být) zaměřena na Británii. Nicméně mnozí připisují stejný význam slovům „Kanaďan“ a „Američan“. Tato práce se zabývá Kanaďany jako národem a pomocí seznamu faktorů vyjadřujících národní identitu založeném na knize Imagined Communities od Benedicta Andersona tvrdí, že kanadský nacionalismus selhal, pokud si Kanada zachová stávající stav.

Abstract:

Canada is hard to define to the outside world. Some would argue that Canada always was a multinational state of at least two distinct nations, because of Québec. Others would answer that because Canada did not gain full independence from the United Kingdom until the year 1982, Canada is (or should strive to be) culturally turned to Britain. However, many people see Canadian to be synonymous with American. This paper takes Canada as a nation and, with use of a list of factors of national identity largely based on Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities, argues that Canadian nationalism has failed, if the country mainains status quo.
