Voluntary childlessness of women under the social surveillance

Abstract:

Dobrovolná bezdětnost si v dnešní době získala své místo mezi životními styly, nicméně to jí nezaručuje status legitimnosti. Ač jsou počty narozených dětí nízké, rodičovství a zvláště mateřství je stále vnímáno jako norma, o kterou by měli všichni usilovat. Zatímco mužská otázka fenoménu je značně neviditelná, představa ženy jako matky je natolik silná, že její volba nemít děti je chápána jako deviantní. Tato práce se soustředí právě na dobrovolnou bezdětnost žen v souvislosti s normativností s ní se pojící, jež pramení ze zakořeněných představ o chování žen a mužů. Problematika je nazírána sociálně konstruktivistickým paradigmatem, práce teoreticky mapuje koncepty genderových rolí a identit s důrazem na jejich dekonstrukci a především pak pojednává komplexně o dobrovolné bezdětnosti s ohledem na diverzitu v definicích a vysvětlováních a se zaměřením na genderovanost a normy, které formují její podobu a vnímání. Stěžejní částí práce je kvalitativní obsahová analýza vybraného internetového diskusního fóra, jejímž cílem je hledat nejčastější témata a normy s dobrovolnou bezdětností spojené s důrazem na zodpovězení hlavní výzkumné otázky, jak je dobrovolná bezdětnost žen v daném prostředí konstruována. Práce dochází k hlavnímu zjištění, že obraz dobrovolné bezdětnosti (žen) je v rámci zkoumaného materiálu značně negativní, opředený hegemonickými imperativy „správného“ ženství a mateřství.

Abstract:

Voluntary childlessness has currently gained its place among life styles, and yet it cannot guarantee the legitimacy status. Despite of the fact that the number of new born children is low, parenting and particularly motherhood is still considered to be a standard everybody should strain after. Whilst the men’s question of this phenomenon is considerably invisible, the idea of a woman – mother is strong in such a degree that her choice not to give birth to children is considered as devious. This thesis is focused on voluntary childlessness of women in context with standards which collocate with it, stemming from ingrained idea of men’s and women’s behaviour. Questions are observed by the means of social constructivists’ paradigm, the thesis surveys in theory the concepts of gender roles and identities, emphasizing their deconstruction, and most importantly complexly treat voluntary childlessness in the light of diversity of definitions and explanations and with focus on the gender-sorted and standards which form its image and perception. The fundamental part of the thesis is qualitative content analysis of selected internet discussion board, whereas the objective was to search for the most discussed topics and standards concerning voluntary childlessness connected with emphasis on finding the answer to the main observational question, how voluntary childlessness is structured in given environment. The thesis comes to main conclusion that the idea of voluntary childlessness (of women) in terms of surveyed matter is extensively negative, storied with hegemonic imperatives of “proper” womanhood and motherhood.
