Identity and urbanity in Belgian rap

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis is to analyse socio-cultural references in the texts of selected Belgian rappers with a focus on expressing of regional and national identity. The starting point was a corpus with twelve songs released between 1998-2020 where four are from an interpreter with an artist name Akro, four from a group Starflam and four songs from a group Glauque. The criteria for selecting the songs was the origin of the artists (relation to the city Namur), but paradoxically, this toponym did not appear in the corpus at all. The theoretical part is focused mainly on the development of the language and sociolinguistics in this area together with a brief description of Belgian rap. It also focuses on main differences between French and Belgian French and on the geographically and linguistically comprehensible concept of the centre and the periphery. The analytical part of the thesis aims to verify thematic and lexical hypotheses (references to Belgian’s history as the main motive of the songs, territorial appropriation of rappers, the dominant position of France over Belgium, distribution of different types of borrowed words, concentration of Belgian toponyms in the texts). Subsequently, the main motifs of the songs are analysed together with references in the form of proper names (including toponyms and anthroponyms), as well as borrowed words.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat sociokulturní reference v textech vybraných belgických raperů se zaměřením na vyjadřování regionální a národní identity. Východiskem se stal korpus dvanácti písní vydaných v rozmezí let 1998-2020 z nichž čtyři jsou od interpreta s uměleckým jménem Akro, čtyři od skupiny Starflam a čtyři písně od skupiny Glauque. Kritérium pro výběr písní byl původ interpretů (vztah k městu Namur), paradoxně se ale tento toponymický referent v korpusu vůbec nevyskytl. Teoretická část je zaměřená především na vývoj jazyka a sociolingvistiky na tomto území společně se stručnou charakteristikou belgického rapu. Dále se zaměřuje na hlavní rozdíly mezi francouzštinou francouzskou a belgickou a dále na geograficky i lingvisticky uchopitelný koncept centra a periférie. Analytická část práce má za cíl ověřit tematické a lexikální hypotézy (referenty odkazující na belgické reálie jako hlavní motiv písně, teritoriální apropriace místa působení rapperů, dominantní postavení Francie vůči Belgii, rozložení různých typů výpůjček, koncentrace belgických toponym v textech). Následně jsou analyzovány hlavní motivy písní spolu s referencemi v podobě vlastních jmen (včetně toponym a antroponym), jakož i výpůjček.
