Representation of Women in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce má za cíl prozkoumat vyobrazení žen v kolekci Canterburské povídky, kterou napsal Geoffrey Chaucer. Aby bylo možné dokázat, že ženské postavy v povídkách odporují ideálům středověké ženy a chování, práce zkoumá role žen nejen v příbězích, ale i jejich postavení ve společnosti středověké Anglie, tak jak ji Chaucer popisuje skrze postavy poutníků. Analýza se ovšem nezabývá pouze postavami žen, které jsou líčené hlasem vypravěček, ale zahrnuje i charakteristiky žen z mužské perspektivy. Dle konvencí středověké společnosti se od žen očekávalo, že budou poslušné a podřízené mužům. Jakýkoli pokus vzepřít se těmto stereotypním názorům byl považován za neposlušnost vůči mužské autoritě. Nicméně Chaucer ve svém díle Canterburské povídky klade důraz na to, jakým způsobem jsou ženy schopny upřednostnit své vlastní potřeby. Výsledky analýzy v této práci tudíž objasňují, jakým způsobem Chaucer oponuje středověkým přesvědčením prostřednictvím těchto ženských postav.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to explore the representation of women in The Canterbury Tales, a collection of stories written by Geoffrey Chaucer. In order to prove that the female characters in the tales contravene the images of an ideal medieval woman and behaviour, the thesis examines the roles of women in the tales, as well as their position in the medieval society of England as portrayed by Chaucer. The analysis not only covers female characters that are described by a female storyteller, but it also deals with the characterizations of women from the male perspective. As per the medieval conventions, women were supposed to be obedient and submissive to men, and any female attempt to defy these stereotypic views was an act of disobedience against the male authority. However, Chaucer highlights the ability of the female characters in The Canterbury Tales to pursue their needs. The results of the thesis therefore provide an insight into how Chaucer opposes the conventional beliefs of the Middle Ages through his female characters.
