Life strategies of digital nomads and their pop-cultural representation

Abstract:

Navrhovaná bakalářská práce bude věnována fenoménu digitálního nomádství. Její teoretická část se bude soustředit na popis sociokulturních a technologických podmínek, které umožnily vznik daného fenoménu a jeho rozšíření po světě. V této části práce budou dále vysvětleny základní termíny. Základem praktické části práce bude etnografický terénní výzkum ve virtuálním prostředí (tzv. netnografický výzkum), který bude zahrnovat rozhovory online a jehož cílem bude porovnání skutečných životních strategií digitálních nomádů, které se podaří získat pro výzkum, s populárními představami o těchto životních strategiích, s nimiž se může setkat uživatel internetu na sociálních sítích i jinde ve virtuálním prostředí. Cílem výzkumu je porovnat zkušenosti digitálních nomádů s opouštěním lidských společenství a začleňováním se do jiných, s populárními představami o možnosti skloubení každodenní práce se svobodným pohybem napříč světem. Takové představy vyplývají mimo jiné z marketingových strategií, jež stojí u základů mnohých sebeprezentací digitálních nomádů, zejména pokud je na daných sebeprezentacích závislý jejich vlastní profesní úspěch (např. blogeři, youtubeři, influenceři). Zamýšlený výzkum by měl přinést odpověď na otázku, do jaké míry a v jakých ohledech splývají každodenní zkušenosti digitálních nomádů s pohybem napříč lidskými společenstvími s jejich veřejnými sebeprezentacemi a stereotypy týkajícími se digitálního nomádství - a do jaké míry se tyto významové roviny zkoumaného fenoménu liší.

Abstract:

The proposed bachelor thesis will focus on the phenomenon of digital nomadism. The theoretical part of the thesis will focus on the description of socio-cultural and technological conditions that enabled the emergence of this phenomenon and its spread around the world. In this part of the thesis the basic concepts will be further explained. The practical part of the thesis will consist of ethnographic field research in virtual environments (so-called netnographic research), which will include online interviews and will aim to compare the real life strategies of digital nomads that can be collected for research with popular perceptions of these life strategies that an internet user may encounter on social media and elsewhere in virtual environments. The aim of the research is to compare digital nomads' experiences of leaving human communities and integrating into others with popular ideas about the possibility of combining everyday work with free movement around the world. These perceptions are based, among other things, on the marketing strategies that underpin many digital nomads' self-presentations, especially when their own professional success depends on self-presentation (e.g. bloggers, YouTubers, influencers). The intended research should answer the question of how and to what extent the everyday experiences of digital nomads moving across human communities coincide with their public self-presentations and stereotypes of digital nomadism - and to what extent these levels of meaning differ.
