Rituals associated with death in contemporary Czech culture

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce bylo odpovědět na otázku: Co vedlo pozůstalé, kteří měli příležitost doprovázet příbuzného při umírání, k přijetí alternativního způsobu loučení se zemřelým namísto dodržení tradičních rituálů spojených se smrtí? Základem teoretické části práce bylo vymezení pojmu „pozůstalý jedinec“, s důrazem na umírání, smrt a doprovázení, dále na vymezení „rituálů“ a jejich dělení s přiblížením přechodových rituálů v různých etapách minulosti a zvláště potom v současnosti, se zaměřením na postavení rituálů v dnešní české kultuře. Pro nalezení odpovědi na výzkumnou otázku byla zvolena kvalitativní metoda výzkumu s technikou polostrukturovaného rozhovoru. Data byla zpracována pomocí fenomenologického zkoumání. Respondenty byly pozůstalí, kteří své příbuzné doprovázeli v umírání v Hospici sv. Alžběty v Brně, a kteří se výzkumu účastnili na základě účelového výběru.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to answer the question: What led the survivors, who had the opportunity to accompany the dying relative, to adopt an alternative way of farewell to the deceased instead of the traditional observance of rituals associated with death? The basis of the theoretical part was the definition of "surviving individual" with an emphasis on dying, death and companionship, as on the definition of "rituals" and their division with a magnification of the rituals of transition at different stages of the past and then especially in the present, focusing on the status of ritual in Czech culture today. To answer the research question, had been chosen qualitative research method with semistructured interview technique. Data were analyzed using phenomenological research. Respondents were survivors, their relatives who accompany the dying in the Hospice of St. Elizabeth in Brno, and who participated in research on special-purpose choice.
