Morphological geometry of Black-headed Gull eggs

Abstract:

Tvary ptačích vajec se vyznačují velkou mezidruhovou, ale i vnitrodruhovou variabilitou a mohou plnit různé ekologické funkce. Výpočet tvaru a přesného objemu vajec je však stále předmětem výzkumu. Ve své práci jsem se zabýval výpočtem oologických charakteristik vajec racka chechtavého (Chroicocephalus ridibundus L.) z dimenzí naměřených na třech souborech – sbírky Ing. F. Mocka a sbírky B. K. Kinského (obě jsou uloženy v depozitáři Národního muzea v Praze), třetí soubor pochází z hnízdní kolonie v NPR Řežabinec v jižních Čechách. Celkem jsem pro svůj výzkum získal potřebné hodnoty u 570 vajec. Na každém vejci zjišťuji devět dimenzí. Tyto dimenze jsem statisticky vyhodnotil pro každý soubor samostatně. Výsledky jsem testoval t-testem. Mezi jednotlivými soubory jsem neshledal významný statistický rozdíl u žádné dimenze. Z hodnot jsem vypočítal objem každého vejce a třemi matematickými způsoby určil jejich tvar. Výsledkem první metody je zařazení tvaru do některé z 12 tvarových kategorií. To je jedna z možností verbálního vyjádření tvaru. Druhá metoda vyjadřuje tvar čtyřmi čísly: Délka ostrého pólu; podélná průřezová plocha ostrého pólu / délka tupého pólu; podélná průřezová plocha tupého pólu. Je vhodná pro matematické porovnávání tvarů a uplatněna může být v aplikované ornitologii. Třetí metoda dokáže po určitých matematických úkonech vyjádřit graficky tvar reálného vejce nebo po jednoduché úpravě tvar srovnatelný s jakýmkoliv jiným vejcem nebo vejci. Po grafickém porovnání průměrných vajec všech třech souborů jsem zjistil, že mezi nimi není téměř žádný rozdíl. Metody jsou dostatečně citlivé, aby vyhověly i podrobným oologickým studiím.

Abstract:

The shapes of birds' eggs are characterized by great interspecific but also intraspecific variability and can fulfill various ecological functions. However, the calculation of the shape and exact volume of eggs is still the subject of research. In my work I dealt with the calculation of oological characteristics of the Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus L.) eggs using the dimensions measured on three collection sets - the collection of Ing. F. Mocek and the collection of B. K. Kinský (both collections are stored in the depository of the National Museum in Prague), the third set comes from a breeding colony in the Řežabinec Nature Reserve in South Bohemia. In total, I obtained the necessary values for 570 eggs for my research. I measured nine dimensions on each egg and statistically evaluated these dimensions for each sample separately. I tested the results using t-test. I did not find statistically significant difference between the samples for any dimension. From the values, I calculated the volume of each egg and determined its shape in three mathematical ways. The result of the first method is the classification of egg shape into one of 12 shape categories. This is one of the possibilities of verbal expression of shape. The second method expresses the shape by four numbers: The length of the sharp pole; longitudinal cross-sectional area of the sharp pole / length of the blunt pole; longitudinal cross-sectional area of the blunt pole. It is suitable for mathematical comparison of shapes and can be used in applied ornithology. The third method can graphically express the shape of a real egg after certain mathematical operations or, after a simple modification, the shape which is comparable with any other egg or eggs. After graphical comparison of the egg means for all three sets I found that there is almost no difference between them. The methods are sensitive enough to be applicable in detailed oological studies.
