Comparison of botanical databases focusing on plant traits

Abstract:

Tato práce popisuje botanické databáze a porovnává nabízené informace, zejména rostlinné znaky různých databází. Popis 11 všeobecně zaměřených a 7 specializovaných databází zahrnuje zaměření, geografické pokrytí, strukturu, fungování a využití databází. Byl vytvořen přehled společných znaků nabízených databázemi. Rostlinné znaky byly roztříděny podle jejich zaměření a funkce do několika kategorií a každé kategorii byly přiřazeny databáze, které nabízejí znaky dané kategorie. Práce nabízí možnost snadnější orientace v rostlinných znacích jednotlivých databází. Přehled společných znaků umožňuje najít větší počet možných zdrojů pro jeden znak, naopak kategorizace znaků uspořádává nabízené, často netradiční znaky a pomáhá při hledání vhodných databází. Celkovým přínosem této práce je vznik přehledného průvodce, který umožní lepší orientaci v databázích při vyhledávání nejvhodnějších dat pro různé studie.

Abstract:

This thesis describes botanical databases and compares their offered information, especially plant traits of various databases. Description of 11 general focused and 7 specialized databases includes their specialization, geographical coverage, structure, functioning and application of the databases. Overview of shared traits offered by databases was created. Plant traits were classified according to their specialization and function into several categories and for each one of them were selected databases which offer plant traits from that category. The thesis offers the possibility of easier orientation in plant traits of individual databases. Overview of shared traits enables us to find a greater number of potential sources for single plant trait, while the categorization organizes offered, often unconventional traits and helps with finding the appropriate databases. The overall contribution of this thesis is the creation of well-arranged guide, that will allow better orientation in databases when searching the most appropriate data for various studies
