Musical life of Czech minority in Banat

Abstract:

Anotace: Ve 20. letech 19. století odchází kolem 10 000 Čechů do rumunského Banátu, tehdy součásti Rakousko-uherské monarchie. Zde založili několik ryze českých vesnic. Z důvodu obtížné dostupnosti, odlišného národnostního původu a jiného náboženského vyznání se vyvíjeli izolovaně a s minimálním stykem s okolními komunitami. To pomáhalo po generace zachovat jazyk, kulturní tradice a zvyky. Největším pojítkem pro přestěhovalce byla a stále zůstává církev. Kulturní život ve vesnicích se stal předmětem několika výzkumů, převážně v 60. letech minulého století. Je vidět, že postupem času mnohé tradice zanikaly. Po ukončení Ceauceskova režimu se situace radikálně mění. Oblast se otevírá turistickému ruchu a nastal výrazný odliv obyvatel, zvláště mladé a střední generace do České republiky. S tím je spojené vylidňování vesnic, z nichž některým hrozí dokonce zánik. Práce se zabývá srovnáním minulého a současného rozsahu hudebního života. České lidové písně ještě stále zaujímají důležité místo v životě krajanů, již to ale neplatí o nejmladší generaci, která se úspěšně asimiluje do rumunského prostředí. Vyšlo několik zpěvníků – nejrozsáhlejší zpěvník děkana Maška, který vnikl po 30ti leté sběratelské práci. Kulturní styk s vlastí probíhá v současnosti velmi intenzivně. Existuje několik pravidelných festivalů, na kterých vystoupují české soubory, buď pořádaných místními nebo organizovanými z České republiky. Z Banátu přijel již několikrát baptistický mandolínový soubor ze Svaté Heleny a kapela Bohemia z Gerníku. Oblast je v posledních letech značně turisticky navštěvovaná a mnoho místních obyvatel i několikrát za rok navštěvuje Českou republiku. V oblasti také působí několik českých učitelů. Otázkou zůstává další zachování tradic a celková životnost obcí v budoucnosti.

Abstract:

Approximately 10,000 Czechs left their homes in the 1820’s for Romanian Banat, in the period of the Austro-Hungarian empire. There they established several purely Czech villages. On the grounds of difficult availability, diverse national origin and different religion their development was unique. Their contact with other communities was rare and for this reason Czech language, folk-lore and customs still exist these days. For Czech immigrants the main connecting link was, and still is, the church. Cultural life in the villages became the subject of several researches, predominantly in 1960’s. It is clear, that as time went on many traditions disappeared. At the end of Caucesko´s regime the situation radically changed. The area of Banat opened up to tourism but natives, especially the young and middle-aged, left Banat for the Czech Republic. It was the start of the depopulation of the Czech villages and some of them are on the brink of disappearance. This bachelor thesis deals with the comparison of the past and present range of musical life. The Czech folk songs have important role in common life of Czech countrymen but the importance of traditions is not accepted by young people of the Czech village, who are assimilating to Romanian life. Some song-books were published – the most extensive is the song-book by Dean Mašek, who wrote this book after 30 years of collecting songs in the area. The cultural relations with the Czech Republic are still nowadays very intensive. There are several regular festivals held by local associations and organized by the people of Czech Republic, in which Czech ensembles also appear. There are several festivals held in Banat organised by people from there and the Cezch Republic which have czech ensembles performing. These have been vistied by many tourists in the recent years.The Baptist mandolin ensemble from Banat´s village Svatá Helena and Bohemia band from Gernik visited the Czech Republic several times. There are a few Czech teachers still working in Banat. The question remains if it is possible for traditions and typical ways of living to survive.
