Motifs of the upside-down world, carnival theme and grotesques in Renaissance and Baroque art in Moravia

Abstract:

Předložená diplomová práce systematicky analyzuje motivy obrácených světů. Tato práce se hlouběji zabývá symbolikou zvířat, která těmto motivům propůjčuje antropomorfní charakter, často využívaný podobným způsobem jako v bajkách. Cílem práce je porozumět různým funkcím těchto motivů, které se mohly měnit v závislosti na historickém a sociálním kontextu. Zatímco někdy sloužily jako prostředek pro podání moralizujícího poselství divákovi, jindy byly používány kriticky ke zpochybňování společenských struktur a řádu, a v některých případech sloužily především k pobavení diváka. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována propojení této tematiky s karnevalovou a smíchovou lidovou kulturou, kde interpretace těchto motivů mohou být různorodé vzhledem k historickému a sociálnímu kontextu jejich vzniku. Práce se také zaměřuje na interpretační aspekty vybraných příkladů na Moravě a zkoumá, zda autoři renesančního a barokního umění navázali na tradici, která spojovala rané antické a středověké prameny s renesančními projevy symboliky přestrojených zvířat.

Abstract:

The submitted thesis systematically analyzes the motifs of inverted worlds. This work delves deeper into the symbolism of animals, which lends anthropomorphic characteristics to these motifs, often used in a similar manner to fables. The aim of the thesis is to understand the various functions of these motifs, which could have changed depending on historical and social contexts. While sometimes serving as a means to convey moralizing messages to the audience, at other times they were used critically to challenge societal structures and order, and in some cases, they primarily served to entertain the audience. Special attention is paid to the connection of this theme with carnival and folk cultures of laughter, where interpretations of these motifs may vary depending on the historical and social context of their origin. The thesis also focuses on the interpretive aspects of selected examples in Moravia and examines whether Renaissance and Baroque artists built on a tradition that connected early ancient and medieval sources with Renaissance expressions of the symbolism of disguised animals.
