Using Visuals in Teaching English Effectively

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je efektivní využití vizuálních materiálů ve výuce díky technologickému pokroku. V teoretické části je práce zaměřena na vysvětlení klíčových pojmů, historii vyučovacích metod pro studenty anglického jazyka, důvody a přínosy zahrnutí vizuálních pomůcek do vyučování a popis rozličných přístupů a vizuálních pomůcek. Praktická část opisuje prováděný výzkum, který proběhl ve dvou skupinách studentů na osmiletém gymnáziu v Prešově. Cílem výzkumu bylo zjistit, zdali vizuální pomůcky zlepšují učební proces a jsou tak efektivním prostředkem ve výuce gramatiky a slovní zásoby. Vizuální materiály byly zhotoveny s využitím inovativních programů pro tvorbu prezentací a online her. Výzkum byl založen na pozorování průběhu hodiny, analýze dotazníků pro studenty a na rozhovoru s učitelkou anglického jazyka. Výsledek výzkumu potvrdil, že vizuální pomůcky ulehčují učební proces, zlepšují motivaci a studenti je hodnotí jako poutavé a přínosné. Z tohoto důvodu by učitelé měli být povzbuzeni při tvorbě vizuálních pomůcek a měli by je zahrnout do každé vyučovací hodiny.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the effective use of visual materials in the classroom enhanced by the progress of technology. The first part provides a theoretical background which focuses on the explanation of key terms, history of EFL teaching methods, reasons and benefits of incorporating visual materials, description of various approaches and visual tools. The second part describes a research project which was conducted in two groups of students in a grammar school with eight - year study program in Prešov. The objective of the research is to determine whether visual materials enhance the learning process and whether they are useful in teaching both, grammar and vocabulary. Visual materials to be used in the classroom were designed using new presentation tools and online games. The research was based on observation during the lesson, an analysis of questionnaires for students and an interview with their English teacher. The outcome of the research confirmed that visual materials facilitate the learning process, increase motivation and students find them beneficial and enjoyable. Therefore, teachers should be encouraged for creating visuals and incorporate them into everyday classroom instruction.
