Activity of group Šmidrové in the 1950s

Abstract:

Malíři Bedřich Dlouhý, Jaroslav Vožniak, sochaři Karel Nepraš, Jan Koblasa a skladatel Rudolf Komorous se významně prosadili v umění na domácí scéně i v zahraničí. Počátky jejich studií na AVU a AMU a prvních počinů v tvorbě však spadají do nesvobodného období padesátých let. Hrstka studentů neochotných podřídit se předepsaným směrnicím postupně upevňovala svá přátelství a názorovou spřízněnost, která byla radikálně odlišná od oficiální politiky a kultury. Kolem poloviny padesátých let založili tito studenti Klub, který se později přejmenoval na skupinu Šmidrové. Prezentovali se jako tajné spiklenecké společenství a pořádali recesistické akce. Uzavřená skupina si vytvořila vlastní kolektivní mytologii a závazná pravidla a odrážela nesmyslný absurdní systém, před kterým prchala. Mystifikací a groteskním humorem Šmidrové odporovali tlaku nepřátelského okolního světa. Přirozeně se setkávali s dalšími studenty všech uměleckých oborů se stejným životním pocitem a společně utvářeli svá budoucí umělecká východiska. Během padesátých let uspořádali několik představení a podíleli se na různých neoficiálních aktivitách, ve kterých většinou bezděčně naznačili spojení umění s běžným životem a akční vstupy do veřejného prostoru, aktuální v šedesátých letech. V rámci zesměšnění oficiální tvorby i své vlastní bezmocné pozice užívali dadaistické negace a zpracovali postupně svůj vlastní program estetiky Divnosti zahrnující smyslově konkrétní odkazy k danému prostředí a uplatňující protiklady. Pocit rozporu mezi ideálem a žitou skutečností se ukázal jako hlubší středoevropská tradice kafkovského odcizení a groteskně absurdní situace. Recese a humor, který dával zapomenout jen na okamžik reálné skutečnosti, byl i zde vhodným počátečním východiskem z nulového bodu, ale nebylo možné jej praktikovat nepřetržitě. Čím dál více se tedy postupně oddělovala vážná tvorba a odlehčené hravé výstupy. Na konci šedesátých let se skupina rozpadla a bývalí členové pokračovali v samostatné výtvarné tvorbě. K dadaistickým a akčním projevům a k směšnosti se však nadále vraceli a podněty z aktivity skupiny ovlivnily i pozdější projevy českého groteskního a akčního umění.

Abstract:

The painters Bedřich Dlouhý, Jaroslav Vožniak, the sculptors Karel Nepraš, Jan Koblasa and the composer Rudolf Komorous have won significant recognition in the arts on both domestic and foreign scenes. The beginning of their studies at the AVU and AMU (the Academies of Fine and Performing Arts) and their first creations, however, fall into the suppressed era of the 1950s. A handful of students unwilling to conform to the prescribed directives gradually strengthened their friendship and opinion alliance, which differed so radically from the official culture and politics. Around the middle of 1950s, these students founded the “Klub”, which was later renamed as the Šmidrové group. They presented themselves as a secret, conspiratorial fellowship and organised pranks. This closed group created its own collective mythology and binding regulations and reflected the nonsensical and absurd system they were trying to flee from. The Šmidrové resisted the pressure from the adverse surrounding world with their mystification and grotesque humour. Naturally they met other students from all artistic fields who shared the same feelings and together they formed their future artistic standpoints. During the 1950s, they organised several performances and contributed to various unofficial activities, in which they usually unwittingly indicated the connection between the arts and normal life as well as “action entries” into the public space which were rather topical in the 1960s. They used dadaistic negations as part of their ridiculing the official works an their own helpless position; gradually they created Divnosti (Weirdnesses), their own aesthetic programme incorporating sensually specific references to the given environment and applying antinomies. This feeling of discrepancy between the ideal and the lived reality revealed itself as a deeper Central European tradition of Kafka-like estrangement and of the grotesquely absurd situation. Even here, the prank and humour, which helped in forgetting reality for a moment, was a suitable starting point from square one, but it was not possible to practise it continuously. In this way serious creative acts and light, playful performances became more and more separated from each other. In the end of 1960s, the group disintegrated and its original members went on with their own artistic projects. However they continued to return to their dadaistic and action expressions and to ridiculousness; impulses arising from the group’s activities influenced later expressions of the Czech grotesque and performance arts.
