The revival of abandoned urban movie theaters - Kino Jalta

Abstract:

The subject of this diploma thesis is the issue of the perished urban cinemas and the possibility of (re)opening such places in the contemporary boom of multiplex theatres. The work also deals with question of the demand for such cinemas and their realistic sustainability in the context of contemporary cinemas in Brno. However, the main point of this work is the creation of a functional manual, according to which a new cinema of this kind could be opened in the future. This work can be divided into two parts. The aim of the first part is to familiarize the reader and the potential cinema visitor with the historical development of classical movie theatres and with the changes that have been brought into this environment by the digitalization until the present age that enjoys the revival of single screen movie theatres. The work also presents current cinematic trends, not only from abroad, but particularly the models of success of Czech and Brno cinemas. We mention not only foreign cinemas and the information that are output from the Europa Cinemas conference, but also domestic movie theatres: Prague cinema Aero, Bio Oko and Světozor. This part of the work also features the question of a possible point in running the classical "alternative" cinema. A positive answer to that question consists mostly of the economic and attendance sustainability of several of the mentioned model cinemas, which are successful in this way. Findings presented in the first part of the thesis are in the second part converted into a manual, a list of procedures that are recommended to follow and explore in the case of (re)opening a single screen cinema. This manual is later applied onto detailed example of a movie theater Jalta, based in Brno on the Dominican Square and, to a lesser extent, on the Kinokaviareň, which is based in the Brno city part of Černá pole. Jalta is described as an example of the pitfalls and opportunities, weaknesses, strengths and the competitiveness of such operations using marketing tools of SWOT analysis and Porter analysis of five forces. One of the main outputs of the manual, which could be one of the pillars of the successful operation of opening a new single screen movie theatre, is the emphasis on the need for thoughtful dramaturgy and the knowledge of cinema's audience.

Abstract:

Předmětem zkoumání této práce je problematika zaniklých městských kin a možnost (znovu) otevření takového prostoru v současné době rozmachu multiplexů a multikin. Práce se věnuje také otázce potřebnosti a reálné udržitelnosti provozu takového kina v kontextu současných brněnských kin. Hlavní gro práce ale představuje vytvoření funkčního manuálu, podle kterého by bylo v budoucnu možné (znovu) otevřít kamenné kino. Tuto práci lze rozdělit na dvě části. Cílem první části je seznámit čtenáře a potenciálního diváka kina s historickým vývojem kamenných kin, se změnami, které do tohoto prostředí přinesla digitalizace až do současného stavu, který se těší opětovnému rozmachu kamenných kin. Práce divákovi také představuje aktuální kinárske trendy, nejen ze zahraničí, ale především také modely tuzemských a brněnských úspěšně fungujících modelů biografů. Zmíněné jsou proto nejen zahraniční kina, které jsou výstupy konference Europa Cinemas, ale i tuzemské kina - pražské kino Aero, Bio Oko a Světozor. V rámci této části si práce klade otázku smyslu existence provozu kamenného "alternativního" kina. Pozitivní odpovědí je především ekonomická a návštěvnická udržitelnost několika zmíněných modelových kin, které tímto způsobem úspěšné fungují. Poznatky prezentovány v první části práce jsou v druhé části přeměněny na jakýsi manuál, seznam postupů, které práce doporučuje sledovat a zkoumat v případě (znovu) otevření kamenného kina. Tento návod je později v práci detailně aplikován na příkladu konkrétního kina - kina Jalta, které sídlí v Brně na Dominikánském náměstí a v menším rozsahu na modelu Kinokavárny, která sídlí v městské části Černé pole. Práce ukazuje na příkladu kina Jalta pomocí marketingových nástrojů - SWOT analýzy a Porterovy analýzy pěti sil, i nástrahy a příležitosti, slabé a silné stránky a konkurenceschopnost takové provozu. Jedním z hlavních výstupů manuálu, který by mohl být jedním z pilířů úspěšného provozu nového kamenného kina, je důraz na potřebnost promyšlené dramaturgie a znalost vlastního publika.
