Cairo at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje problematice architektonického a urbanistického vývoje káhirských čtvrtí Zamálik, Garden City a Heliopolis, jež vznikaly jako nové ostrůvky zástavby na přelomu 19. a 20. století. Jako časový rámec ohraničující zkoumané období byl zvolen počátek stavebního boomu a výstavby "Paříže na Nilu" za vlády chedíva Ismáíla, tedy v závěru 60. a na počátku 70. let 19. století. Aby byl zvolený časový horizont vyvážený, vývoj je sledován až do 30. a 40. let 20. století, kdy byl jako hraniční moment zvolen rozkvět moderní architektury ovlivněné stylem Art déco a racionalismem. Jádro práce tvoří případové studie tří městských čtvrtí: Zamáliku, Garden City a Heliopole. U každé z těchto čtvrtí je nejprve popsána její lokace v rámci celého města, následně její vznik a vývoj v rámci studovaného období stejně jako situace, v níž se daná čtvrť nachází v současnosti. Poté jsou prezentovány zastoupené architektonické styly a typy staveb prostřednictvím několika konkrétních příkladů. Závěr práce obsahuje závěrečné srovnání všech tří případových studií.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the topic of development in the field of urbanism and architecture of the city at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The "turn of the centuries" is a quite vague term, which can be understood in numerous different ways. The thesis observes a bit wider period between the year 186768, when started a masive transformation of the city, and the 30s / 40s of the 20th centrury. The main part of the thesis consists of case studies of three quarters, which occured as a results of development undertaken during the observed period: Zam?lik, Heliopolis and Garden City. In all three cases the text focuses on the geographical characteristics of the quarter, it's birth, following urbanistic and architectural development, the social groups which lived there during the observed period and finally the situation of the quartier today. The conclusion of the thesis includes the final comparsion of the three quarters. It is clear that although there is a lot of similarities, each quarter reflects a bit different tendecies and has it's specific characteristics.
