Screening practices in theatres before World War I: a genealogical probe into performance and screening relations and a theatre specificity constitution

Abstract:

Disertace zdůvodňuje promítání v repertoárových divadlech během etablování kinematografie jako dominantní kulturní formy na začátku dvacátého století. V divadelních budovách se konaly různá audiovizuální představení založená na promítání. Možnosti kombinace projekce a scénického vystoupení k popularizaci poznatků moderní vědy byly prozkoumávány osvětovými organizacemi jako Urania v Berlíně a ve Vídni. Vytvořily proto novou scénickou formu – vědecké divadlo (Wissenschaftliche Theater). K analýze vztahů mezi divadelnictvím a audiovizuálními formami na začátku dvacátého století kombinuji teatrologický přístup s tzv. novou historií kina. Proto se zaměřují na performativní aspekt promítání. Inspiruji se symetrickou antropologií Bruno Latoura a zaměřuji se na paradoxní a hybridní povahu kulturních procesů mezi divadlem a kinem. Využívám koncept kontemplativní kinematografie Charlese Mussera a propojuji jej s konceptem kina atrakcí Toma Gunninga a André Gaudreaulta. K analýze vztahu topologických, sociálních a estetických struktur používám pojem dispozitiv. Abych popsal dynamiku změn v kulturních formách a zejména vztah mezi staršími a novějšími formami a jejich a s nimi spojenými praktikami, kombinuji jej s koncepcí remediace. K repertoárovým divadlům také přistupuji jako k formám populární kultury a ne jako k institucím „vysokého umění“. Na příkladě německého Městského divadla v Brně představuji materiální podmínky promítání a typy jeho provozovatelů. Relativně rozmanitý program jejich produkcí považuji za příklad marketingové strategie oslovení publika z širokých sociálních vrstev a zároveň získání nejbohatších. V pokusu o ustavení pravidelných promítání v německém Městském divadle v Brně se angažovaly také místní kulturní elity a odpovídal dobové koncepci ušlechtilé zábavy. Tehdejší změny v divadelním publiku souvisely s obecnou proměnou nabídky a návštěvnosti kulturních forem v rakouské monarchii a s procesem urbanizace. Divadla nabízely operety a populární zábavu širokému publiku a zároveň se snažily být institucí „vysokého umění“. Proto bylo etablování kinematografie před první světovou válkou součástí komplexní změny a nejen z pohledu divadel nežádoucí konkurencí. Jak ukazuji v Brně, divadla na tuto změnu reagovala návrhy na změnu hlediště, omezením drahých míst a rozšířením levnějších míst. Také žádala o licence k provozování kina.

Abstract:

In this doctoral thesis, I present reasons for screening practices in central European reper­tory theatres at the beginning of the 20th century; in the era when the cinema was consti­tuted as a dominant cultural form. At that time, theatre buildings were places which offered not only theatrical shows but also organized audiovisual performances of differ­ent kind of projected image. I analyse them first and foremost with examples from Ger­man Municipal theatre in Brno (Stadttheater Brünn) and Czech National Theatre in Brno (Národní divadlo v Brně). At the end of the 19th century, educational organizations – such as Urania in Berlin, Vienna or Budapest – experimented with the possible combinations of projection, stage perform­ance, and science popularization. In order to analyse relations between theatre culture and audiovisual forms at the begin­ning of the 20th century, I decided to combine the theatre studies approach with the so called new film history. I thus consider screenings as events and underline their perform­ative aspect. My research has been inspired by Bruno Latour’s “symmetric anthropology”. Following Latour, I therefore focus on paradoxical and “hybrid” character of cultural processes in theatre and cinema. I apply the concept of „cinema of contemplation“ and „cinema of discernment” by Charles Musser and combine it with the „cinema of attraction“ concept by Tom Gunning André Gaudreault. I employ the concept of dispositif (also translated into english as apparatus). It allows me to approach different heterogeneous procedures and entities such as theatre architecture, law and security regulation, social structure of audience and ticket prices as one complex structure, and it helps me to “translate” the symbolic and ideological categories into topological ones, and vice versa. To analyse relations between old and new media forms and social practices linked with them, the notion of dispositif is further combined with the concept of remediation as was developed by Jay Bolter and Richard Grusin. I also approach repertory theatres as institutions of modern popular culture and not purely as institution of „high“ culture. After the methodological discussion in the second chapter, I present the material condi­tions of screening events on the example of Stadttheater Brünn; the types of practitioners and entrepreneurs such as travelling exhibitors and educational organizations are de­scribed in here. The visual material which was used in the performances of projected images at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century consisted of slides in different form­ant and various adjustments. The illustrated lectures belonged to the repertory of activities of educational organiza­tions. I present them in the fourth chapter. The Urania organization also developed a new presentation format – the science theatre – that was based on the combination of stage practices (like stage design, declamation, or script), screening and education. I also discus several attempts for establishing Urania-like program in Brno. I analyse this newly established cultural form as an example of blending of contemplative and attractive model of presentation and perception. The changes in theatre public and audience of cultural events were strongly connected to the accelerated process of urbaniza­tion and the following constitution of modern popular culture. In this dynamic constellation, the consti­tution of cinema was one of elements of a more complex change, rather than an exclusive reason for the crisis of theatres. One of the reactions of theatres that I observed in the context of Brno theatre culture was an attempt for obtaining the cinema license. In the end, both attempts were unsuc­cessful.
