Response of tree seedlings to drought as affected by form of available nitrogen

Abstract:

Hybridní topol získává popularitu jako energetická plodina, zdroj levného dřeva i jako pokusný organismus. Informace o interakcích mezi zdrojem dusíku a nedostatkem vody a jejich působení na růst mladých rostlin topolu v současnosti nejsou dostupné, avšak mohly by být významné nejen pro základní výzkum, ale také pro využití v lesnické praxi. Literární úvod této práce se věnuje shrnutí dostupných informací o topolu a jeho využití, dále amonným a nitrátovým iontům jako zdroji dusíku pro růst rostlin topolů a důsledkům jejich vyžívání pro fungování rostlin. V posledním bloku rešeršní části se věnuji obecnému popisu vlivu sucha na rostliny. V experimentální části této práce je popsán faktoriální experiment s mladými stromky topolu kanadského (Populus x canadiensis), které byly vyživované převážně amonnými nebo převážně nitrátovými ionty. Zkoumal jsem, zda dominantní výživa jedním z těchto iontů má vliv na růst a vývoj rostlin, jejich reakci na nedostatek vody a jejich zotavení po velkém stresu suchem. Výsledky experimentu ukázaly, že topoly dobře rostou v přítomnosti obou zdrojů dusíku. Některé z efektů působení různých zdrojů dusíku popsaných v literatuře se podařilo ukázat také v této práci. Amonná výživa byla spojena s nižší hodnotou specifické listové plochy, nižšími hodnotami vodního potenciálu listů a bodu vadnutí. Byly charakterizovány některé z reakcí topolů na sucho. Výsledky ukazují, že topol v průběhu narůstajícího nedostatku vody v substrátu udržuje poměrně dlouhou dobu vysoké rychlosti transpirace. Zdroj dusíku neměl výrazný vliv na reakci rostlin topolu na sucho a průběh jejich zotavení po stresu.

Abstract:

The Hybrid poplar is gaining popularity as an energy crop, source of cheap wood, and even as an experimental organism. There is a lack of information about the interaction of poplar cuttings with nitrogen nutrition during growth and during drought, but knowledge about this topic might be very valuable in forestry. The introduction section of this thesis is divided into three parts. The first one is focused on summarising basic knowledge about poplars and their various use. The second one is focused on the characterization of nitrate and ammonium nutrition. The third one is focused on the general description of drought impacts on plants. In the experimental part of the thesis, Populus x canadensis cuttings were grown in two groups under majority nitrate and majority ammonium nutrition. Each group was investigated for growth parameters responses to drought and drought recovery. The results were compared with existing literature. Ammonium nutrition was associated with lower specific leaf area, leaf water potential was lower in well-watered ammonium form as well as lower wilting point. No significant difference in growth patterns and drought response and recovery was recorded. During drought, poplars kept high transpiration rates even during low soil water content. Nitrogen sources didn‘t have a significant impact on the reaction of poplar to drought and its recovery from stress.
