Between True and False Friends: Corpus Analysis of Students' Translations

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá problematikou „částečných přátel“ (partial false friends) a „přátel s nuancemi“ (nuance differentiated word pairs) ve studentských překladech a klade si za cíl prozkoumat vhodnost těchto překladů. Pomocí dat získaných z Českého národního korpusu jsou zkoumány kolokace či jakákoliv další vodítka, která umožní stanovit, zda jsou použité české překladové varianty studentů idiomatické a zda studenti mají sklon překládat formálně podobnými slovy i tam, kde to není vhodné. Nakonec jsou podniknuty kroky k nalezení případných tendencí používat formálně odlišné překlady pro slova, u nichž by formálně stejné či podobné alternativy byly rovněž přijatelné.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the issue of partial false friends and nuance differentiated word pairs in students’ translations and aims to explore the appropriateness of such translated language. Data found in the Czech National Corpus are studied extensively in order to find collocational patterns or any other useful clues that could be employed for assessing the idiomacy of Czech in the translations and for determining whether students tend to use look-alike words in contexts where these cognates are unacceptable. Finally, possible tendencies toward using non-cognate alternatives to perfectly acceptable cognates are also of interest.
