Abstract:

Diplomová práce analyzuje zkušenost jamajských imigrantů po druhé světové válce v Británii v díle Small Island od Andrey Levy. Práce zkoumá problémy objevující se v britské společnosti po příjezdu první generace karibských imigrantů, s důrazem na překážky a zkoušky, které tito imigranti museli překonávat v rámci asimilace, adaptace a akulturace v cizím prostředí. Cílem práce je prozkoumat a analyzovat, jak román odráží atmosféru poválečné britské společnosti společně s problémy a změnami spojenými se střetem rozdílných kultur a ras způsobeným karibskou diasporou.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis analyses the experience of Jamaican immigrants after the Second World War in Britain in Andrea Levy’s Small Island. The thesis explores the problems that occur in the British society after the arrival of the first generation of Caribbean immigrants, with the main focus on obstacles and trials that have to be undergone by the West Indians in the process of the assimilation, adaptation and acculturation in an alien environment. The aim of the thesis is to explore and analyse how the novel reflects the atmosphere in the post-war British society alongside with the issues and changes connected to the clash of cultures and races caused by the Caribbean diaspora.
