The (in)ability of secondary vocational school graduates to meet the expectations of employers

Abstract:

This thesis is a case study examining graduates of a Secondary school with engineering focus and options these graduates have on the local labor market. The question being answered is: How do the graduates of the selected secondary vocational schools (taking into account the possibilities of school) meet expectations of employers in the region? The thesis explores and describes the situation especially from the perspective of employers in the region, because it is the employers who ultimately enable the graduates to enter the labor market. The thesis also takes into account the view of the school represented by teachers who are educating the graduates. Method of data collection were semi-structured interviews conducted with employers and teachers. The empirical part of the thesis consists of an analysis of these interviews. Employers tend to have a rather negative expectations about the level of competence of graduates. Their expectations are largely being met by the current graduates. Educators who are in charge of theoretical and practical training agreed with the employers statement that level of certain basic professional competences (eg. reading technical drawings) is low. Analysis and interpretation of the data, led to a finding that the way in which employers' expectations are generated is affected by the size of the company, availability of human resources, and cooperation with the school. The conclusion suggests a possible solution to the problem of insufficient exchange of information between schools and employers in the form of a coordinator who would mediate efficient communication between the two parties.

Abstract:

Táto práca je prípadovou štúdiou, ktorá skúma absolventov Strednej priemyselnej školy so strojárskym zameraním a ich možnosti uplatnenia na lokálnom trhu práce. Otázka, na ktorú práca odpovedá znie: Ako napĺňajú absolventi vybranej Strednej odbornej školy (s prihliadnutím na možnosti školy) očakávania zamestnávateľov v okrese? Práca situáciu skúma a popisuje hlavne z pohľadu zamestnávateľov v okrese, pretože sú to práve zamestnávatelia, ktorí v konečnom dôsledku absolventom trh práce sprístupňujú. Pre úplnosť sa berie do úvahy pohľad školy sprostredkovaný pedagógmi, ktorý absolventov vychovávajú. Metodikou zberu dát boli pološtruktúrované rozhovory so zamestnávateľmi a pedagógmi. Empirická časť práce pozostáva z analýzy týchto rozhovorov. Zamestnávatelia mali skôr negatívne očakávania o úrovni kompetencií absolventov. Ich očakávania sú v súčasnosti absolventmi v prevažnej miere napĺňané. Pedagógovia, ktorý majú na starosti teoretickú a praktickú odbornú prípravu vyjadrili súhlas s vyjadreniami zamestnávateľov o tom, že úroveň niektorých základných odborných kompetencií (napr. čítanie technického výkresu) je na nízkej úrovni. Analýza a interpretácia dát viedla k zisteniu, že na spôsob akým sú očakávania zamestnávateľov vytvárané vplýva veľkosť ich firmy, dostupnosť ľudských zdrojov a spolupráca so školou. Záver práce navrhuje možné riešenie problému nedostatočnej výmeny informácii medzi školou a zamestnávateľmi v podobe koordinátora, ktorý by sprostredkoval efektívnu komunikáciu medzi oboma stranami.
