Web application for cataloging recipes and nutrition planning

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá návrhem a implementací desktopové aplikace pro katalogizaci receptů a plánování výživy s ohledem na týdenní cíle v oblasti energetické hodnoty a makroživin (bílkoviny, sacharidy a tuky). Aplikace je navržena jako lokální řešení postavené na platformě Electron, kdy veškerá data jsou ukládána výhradně v souborovém systému uživatele a aplikace funguje plně offline bez nutnosti připojení k externím serverům. Tento přístup adresuje rostoucí poptávku po nástrojích respektujících soukromí uživatele. Teoretická část analyzuje potřeby jednotlivce při plánování jídel, porovnává existující řešení dostupná na českém i mezinárodním trhu a hodnotí vhodnost zvolených technologií – Electron, React, Node.js a SQLite. Dále představuje základy teorie výživy včetně výpočtu energetické hodnoty potravin z makroživin a popisuje modifikovaný vodopádový model vývoje softwaru. K ověření použitelnosti výsledné aplikace je zvolena metoda System Usability Scale. Praktická část popisuje realizaci aplikace podle jednotlivých fází zvoleného metodického přístupu: sběr a analýza požadavků, návrh systému a datového modelu, implementace hlavního procesu Electronu, backendového API v Node.js a frontendu v Reactu, distribuce ve formě nativních instalačních balíčků, testování s vyhodnocením pomocí System Usability Scale a návrh dalšího rozvoje. Aplikace umožňuje operace Create, Read, Update, Delete (CRUD) nad recepty, vyhledávání a filtrování podle nutričních parametrů, automatickou tvorbu týdenního menu splňujícího uživatelem zadané kalorické a makroživinové limity, generování agregovaného nákupního seznamu a export plánu do formátu PDF. V závěru jsou dosažené výsledky porovnány s cíli stanovenými metodou Objectives and Key Results (OKR), diskutována zjištěná omezení implementace a nastíněny možnosti budoucího rozšíření.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis deals with the design and implementation of a desktop application that serves as a catalog of recipes and supports nutrition planning with respect to weekly goals in terms of energy value and macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats). The application is designed as a local solution built on the Electron platform, where all data is stored exclusively in the user’s file system and the application operates fully offline without the need for connection to external servers. This approach addresses the growing demand for privacy-respecting tools. The theoretical part analyzes individual needs in meal planning, compares existing solutions available on the Czech and international markets, and evaluates the suitability of the selected technologies – Electron, React, Node.js, and SQLite. Furthermore, it presents the basics of nutrition theory including the calculation of energy value from macronutrients, and describes a modified waterfall software development model. To verify the usability of the resulting application, the System Usability Scale method is applied. The practical part describes the implementation of the application according to the individual phases of the chosen methodological approach: requirements gathering and analysis, design of the system and data model, implementation of the Electron main process, the Node.js backend API, and the React frontend, distribution in the form of native installation packages, testing with evaluation using the System Usability Scale, and the design of further development. The application enables Create, Read, Update, Delete (CRUD) operations on recipes, searching and filtering by nutritional parameters, automatic generation of a weekly menu meeting user-defined caloric and macronutrient limits, generation of an aggregated shopping list, and export of the plan to PDF format. In the conclusion, the achieved results are compared with the goals set using the Objectives and Key Results (OKR) method, the identified implementation limitations are discussed, and possibilities for future extensions are outlined.
