Body, Social Change and Ideology in Perception and Naratives of Biohackers

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá konceptem biohackingu a jeho konkrétními pozorovanými projevy na komunitě sdružené okolo Paralelní Polis v Praze. Formálně shrnuje koncepty transhumanismu, tělesných modifikací a hackingu a jejich konkrétní projevy v narativech a postojích biohackerů. Práce diskutuje dva hlavní okruhy biohackerských snah: rovinu tělesnou a rovinu společenské změny. Na rovině tělesna diskutuje tři hlavní body: přístup k tělesným augmentacím jako možnosti překonání biologických hranic, názory biohackerů ohledně role fyzického těla, a konceptualizaci modifikovaného těla jako spojení postavy kyborga v jejích rozličných významech. Na rovině společenské tato práce popisuje formálně nekodifikovanou etiku, skrývající se za biohackerským počínáním. Ukazuje biohackerský přístup ve své celistvosti jako aktivní a vědomý, spíše následující aktivní formování vlastního světa, jak ho naznačuje Levy, než Foucaultova poslušná těla ovládaná skrze biomoc jinými. Zároveň neopomíjí slabiny biohackingu v jeho současné podobě manifestované na biohackerech v Paralelní Polis, jakými jsou zjevná ideologičnost a částečné uzavírání se v přístupu „my proti vám“.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis describes the concept of biohacking and its specific aspects as they relate to the community surrounding the Paralelní Polis hackerspace in Prague. It formally introduces the concepts of transhumanism, body modifications and hacking and their concrete manifestations in the narratives and attitudes of biohackers. The thesis discusses two main topics common to biohacker activities: the physical body and the social change. From the physical viewpoint, it discusses three main points: the application of physical augmentations to surpass biological limitations, biohackers opinion structure regarding the physical body, and the conceptualization of the modified body as the common connection of the cyborg concept in all its realizations. From the social viewpoint, this thesis investigates the informal ethics common to biohacker communities. It shows the biohacker approach in its entirety as active and conscious, more akin to the participation in formation of individual worldviews as described by Levy rather than Foucault’s docile bodies controlled through biopower by others. This work also contains the description of the failings of biohacking in its current form as observed in Paralelní Polis community, which can be attributed to ideological adherence and reduction to the „us against them“ attitude.
