Mother Earth, Sister Mountain The Portrayal of Women's Relationship with the Land in Appalachian Literature

Abstract:

The idea of womanhood in Appalachia is determined by three principle areas. Women are shown to be strongly connected to place, to the Appalachian Mountains themselves and the land they work. This relation to the land is not merely a psychological one, but physically manifested as well. The second thing that defines Appalachian women is their power in the domestic sphere, from housekeeping, farm work, and particularly motherhood. Woman experience the most power and influence in their domestic realm, which is almost an unquestioned authority. This relation to their work and children is also strongly connected to the women’s own sense of identity. The last area which defines womanhood is the working of crafts, arts, such as painting, music and writing, and the practice of healing and herb lore. All women of the mountains obtain and use at least one art or craft.
