Globalization and Neorealism: Theory and Case Studies

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vztahem neorealistické teorie mezinárodních vztahů a ekonomické globalizace. Testovaná hypotéza je formulována negativně a ptá se na schopnost neorealismu inkorporovat fenomén globalizace do teorie. Hypotéza se vztahuje jenom na vybrané případové studie Číny a Evropské unie, není obecným hodnocením neorealismu. V práci přijímám základní neorealistické předpoklady a zkoumám, zda má ekonomická globalizace strukturální důsledky. Kauzalita argumentace je následující: suverenita států je nevyhnutelným předpokladem platnosti neorealismu a ekonomická globalizace omezuje suverenitu Číny a členských států Evropské unie, protože působí v rámci struktury mezinárodního systému jako nová objektivní složka. Hypotéza se u obou případových studiích potvrdila, je ji ale nutné chápat v kontextu přijatých předpokladů, definic a argumentační logiky.

Abstract:

The final thesis deals with the relation between neorealist theory of international relations and economic globalization. The hypothesis claims that neorealism is not able to embrace phenomena of economic globalization into its theory. The hypothesis covers only case studies of China and European union exclusively, it is not an evaluation of neorealism in general. I accept the basic neorealist assumptions thus pursuing the enquiry whether economic globalization implies structural consequences or not. I conclude that so far as the sovereignty is necessary condition for validity of neorealism and sovereignty is limited with economic globalization, the globalization must be a new structural component of international system and it changes the nature of structure as it is defined by neorealism. The hypothesis is confirmed for both case studies, but it is necessary to understand it in the context of assumptions, definitions and causal logic of argumentation.
