„Wohl, tüchtig und tauerhafft.“ Construction activities of Adam Franz Prince of Schwarzenberg (1703–1732)

Abstract:

Cílem disertační práce je poznat okolnosti vzniku staveb na schwarzenberských panstvích a jejich zasazení do sociálního kontextu. Dosavadní bádání bylo zaměřeno na otázky kdy, kdo, za kolik: kdy stavba vznikla, kdo byl jejím autorem, popřípadě kolik stála. Volím odlišné výchozí otázky: proč a jak: proč stavba vznikla a jakým způsobem, proč byly pro danou úlohu zvoleny užité formy. Výchozí otázky směřují k poznání okolností vzniku staveb na schwarzenberských panstvích a jejich zasazení do sociálního kontextu. Disertační práce je především případovou studií o stavitelství na schwarzenberských panstvích v Čechách, Rakousích a Německu za vlády knížete Adama Františka ze Schwarzenbergu (1680-1732, reign 1703-1732). Zkoumám především stavby při patronátních budovách (kostely, kaple, špitály aj.) a při tzv. „Prachtgebäuden“ – zámcích a letohrádcích. Zabývám se také personálním zajištěním staveb – zkoumám kariéry knížecích stavitelů Antona Erharda Martinelliho a Pavla Ignáce Bayera, jakož i polírů Franze Fortina, Lorenze Habela a dalších řemeslníků. Pozornost věnuji i roli knížecích úředníků při stavbě a vybavení knížecích objektů. Disertace je založena na studiu ojediněle dochovaných pramenů schwarzenberské provenience – dobové korespondence, plánů, účetního materiálu, inventářů aj. Výsledky výzkumu jsou následující. Stavební podnikání knížete Adama Františka bylo zajištěno systematicky budovanou sítí stavebních řemeslníků zorganizovanou Pavlem Ignácem Bayerem a knížecími úředníky na jednotlivých panstvích. Klíčové bylo postavení panského stavitele, který pravidelně jezdil na panství a po obhlídce staveb navrhoval nezbytné opravy i novostavby. Jeho plány realizovali panští políři. Místní úředníci zajišťovali stavební materiál a další organizaci stavby. Patronátní objekty byly upravovány především kvůli nevyhovujícím rozměrům a špatnému stavebnímu stavu. Nevýrazná podoba staveb je dána rozpočtovými omezeními knížete a jeho úředníků. Stavby při zámcích byly vyvolány snahou modernizovat starší již nevyhovující objekty a přizpůsobit je dobovému obytnému standardu. Jednotlivé stavby byly pojednány obdobnými formami, což vtisklo knížecím zámkům jednotný vizuální styl.

Abstract:

The aim of the PhD Thesis is to identify the original context of the Construction activities of Adam Franz Prince of Schwarzenberg (1680–1732) and to recognize the social context of the provided buildings. The previous research has been focused on the questions of authorship and dating of various buildings that were mainly treated as solitary monuments. I see the issue from a different perspective. My research tries to answer questions such as why and how, instead of who, what and when. I´m interested in recognizing the reasons of building and remodelling the buildings within the whole princely domain in Central Europe. The submitted PhD Thesis is a case study dealing with the topic of construction activities in the Schwarzenberg´ Family manors in Bohemia, Austria and Germany. I examine the construction activities by the patronage buildings, such as churches, chapels, and hospitals, and by so called „Prachtgebäuden“, or, the princely Castles and Villas. I also discuss the careers of the princely architects Anton Erhard Martinelli (1683?-1747), Pavel Ignác Bayer (c. 1655?-1733) and foremen bricklayers Franz Fortin (1683-after 1750), Lorenz Habel (1696-1766) and other craftsmen (masons, carpenters, stonemasons etc.). I am interested in the role of the princely officials as well. The PhDr thesis is based on the extensive research of the uniquely preserved Schwarzenberg´ archives. The primary sources include correspondence, accounts, inventories, plans etc. The research outcomes are as follows. The construction activities of Adam Franz Prince of Schwarzenberg was supported by the systematically established network of architects, master builders and other craftsmen whose proceedings were supported and co-organized by the princely officials. The patronage buildings were remodelled because of the practical reasons, such as a lack of space and the state of disrepair of the buildings. Similarly, the princely Castles were remodelled due to the unsatisfactory state of the dwelling chambers. Unlike the current opinion, I recognize Adam Franz Prince of Schwarzenberg not only as an enthusiastic builder but also as a good „Hausvater“, in other words, the protector of the property and of the subjects that he was supposer to care for.
