Hedging in Political Discourse: The Language of Brexit

Abstract:

The aim of every student and teacher of a foreign language should be to understand even the complex structures of language which go beyond what textbooks traditionally teach. The awareness of such structures and their function may not only prevent misunderstanding, but may help us understand, for instance, what power the language of the media may have. This work provides theoretical background to discourse analysis and linguistic hedging. The empirical part examines the use of hedging expressions in news and analysis articles on the topic of Brexit before the Brexit Referendum in 2016. The findings show that there are differences in the use of hedging expressions between the samples of the language used by Remain and Leave supporters. The use of hedging might have made the arguments of the Remain side less persuasive.

Abstract:

Cílem každého studenta a učitele cizího jazyka by mělo být porozumět i složitým strukturám jazyka, které přesahují to, co je tradičně obsahem učebnic. Pochopení těchto struktur a jejich funkce může nejen předcházet nedorozumění, ale může nám také pomoci porozumět tomu, jakou moc může mít například jazyk médií. Tato práce se v teoretické části zabývá analýzou diskurzu a hedges v anglickém jazyce. Empirická část zkoumá použití hedges v analytických a názorových článcích na téma Brexit před referendem o Brexitu v roce 2016. Výsledky ukazují, že existují rozdíly v použití hedges mezi odpůrci a zastánci Brexitu. Použití hedges mohlo způsobit, že argumenty odpůrců Brexitu zněly méně přesvědčivě.
