Syrian foreign policy under Bashar al-Assad

Abstract:

Diplomová práce s názvem „Zahraniční politika za Baššára al-Asada“ je analýzou nejdůležitějších charakakteristik zahraniční politiky Sýrie s důrazem na současnou vládu Baššára al-Asada. Předchozí syrský prezident Háfiz al-Asad Sýrii nejen sjednotil a ukončil dlouholeté období vojenských převratů, ale také z ní učinil významnou regionální mocnost, jejíž úloha je v současnosti 8 let po jeho úmrtí mnohdy podceňována. Mezinárodní pozorovatelé po zvolení nového prezidenta Baššára al-Asada často předpovídali oslabení celého režimu. Sýrie ale stále hraje jednu z nejdůležitějších rolí v řešení lokálních krizí, které ovlivňují stabilitu celého mezinárodního systému. Sýrie si i přes složité geopolitické postavení v rámci rozbouřeného regionu dokázala i po nástupu Baššára al-Asada uchovat svoji důležitou pozici regionální mocnosti, která může účinně zasahovat do řešení místních konfliktů. Její zahraniční politika je tvořena pouze za účelem sledování několik desetiletí stabilních a stejných státních zájmů, které Sýrii mají regionálně silné postavení pomoci zajistit. Zohlednění syrského nesporného vlivu na celý region by v konečném důsledku mohlo mít stabilizační účinek.

Abstract:

My dissertation called “Foreign Policy under the government of Bashar al-Asad” is an analysis of the most significant characteristics of Syria’s foreign policy, emphasizing the current government of Bashar al-Asad. The former Syrian President, Hafez al-Asad, not only united Syria and put an end to a long period of military coups d’etat but he also made it a prominent regional power the role of which is frequently underestimated currently eight years after his death. After Bashar al-Asad having been elected a new president, international observers often predicted the whole regime weakening. However, Syria still plays one of the most important roles in dealing with local crises having an impact on a stability of the whole international system. In spite of its complicated geo-political position in a turbulent region, Syria has managed to preserve its important position of a regional power able to intervene in solving local conflicts efficiently, even under Bashar al-Asad. Its foreign policy is formulated only to follow several decades of stable and constant state interests that are to help Syria to ensure a strong position in the region. Finally, taking the Syrian indisputable influence on the whole region into account could result in a stabilisation in the region.
