Private radio in the Czech republic - the case of AZ radio Proglas

Abstract:

Studie Soukromé rádio v R: pípady AZ Radia a Radia Proglas se zamuje na souasnou podobu soukromého rozhlasového vysílání v eské republice. Postupn pedstavuje koncepty a modely reflektující rádio jako dležité médium re-strukturující každodennost moderní spolenosti a identifikuje jednotlivé prvky programu. Dále si všímá vztahu rozhlasového a hudebního prmyslu, financování vysílání a rzných typ rozhlasových publik. Práce zmiuje i souasný vývoj, strukturu, legislativní zarámování a programové zamení soukromých vysílatel v eské republice po roce 1989. Na základ tohoto výkladového rámce studie pedstavuje dv vybrané regionální stanice. Rockové AZ Radio jako komerní úzceformátovou stanici a bezformátové kesanské Radio Proglas.

Abstract:

The case study Private radio in the Czech republic the case of AZ radio and Radio Proglas is focused on the current shape of the private broadcasting in the Czech republic. The first part introduces concepts and models which reflect radio as an important medium which has been re-structured the everyday life in the modern society. It identificates particular parts of the programme, in the concrete the spoken word, moderation, news, music, jingles and commercials. Next it observes radio and music industry, funding of the broadcasting and different types of publics. In the part two this work involves current progress, structure, legislation frame and programme targeting of private broadcasters in the Czech republic after 1989. Except distinction of the two broadcasting models, range system of the radio stations into four quadrants, the periodization of five music phases and briefly involves the history of ratings. On the basis of this expository frame the study introduces in the third part two selected regional radio stations. While rock AZ radio represents commercial narrowformat radio station, christian non format Radio Proglas is focused about delivering a message. These selected radio stations are compared on the basis of distinction between foreground and backround radio, active and passive, men and women audience, global and local identity, and further about commodification practices, kind and origin of music or relation to record companies. While AZ radio offers to his passive audience backround splash of anglo-american rock hits in exchange of money of the advertisers, foreground Radio Proglas actively participates on the local (music) culture and is mostly funded by its audience. For all that these two different radio stations face up together the possible risks of incoming digitalization, changes in the structure of population and the ways of music products consumption.
