The animated reality of Isao Takahata

Abstract:

V této práci se zabývám analýzou tvorby Isao Takahaty s ohledem na jeho využití animovaného média. Věnuji se v ní analýze specifických charakteristik jeho tvorby, rozboru formálních aspektů, zaobírám se filozofií a hlavním poselstvím jeho filmů. Dále se v ní zabývám momenty, v nichž Takahata otevírá prostor pro své fantazijní exprese, vysvětluji jejich účel v kontextu dané scény a plynulé propojení s realistickým časoprostorem filmu. Jako hlavní příklad Takahatova využití neorealismu mi zde slouží film Hrob světlušek, zatímco analýza Příběhu o princezně Kaguje se více zabývá zkoumáním fantazijních elementů tolik charakteristických pro Takahatovu tvorbu. Ve srovnávací analýze zmiňovaných filmů se věnuji jejich odlišnostem i podobnostem a z nich vyplývající škále formálních aspektů Takahatovy tvorby. Cílem této práce je vytvořit koherentní obraz o tom, jak Takahata využívá animace, aby sdělil své myšlenky, pohled na svět a nás v něm a aby vyprávěl univerzální příběhy.Analýza těchto jevů by měla objasnit důvody, proč dané filmy nemohou existovat v žádné jiné formě než animované a proč jeho filmy dodnes oslovují a inspirují ostatní tvůrce.

Abstract:

This thesis revolves around examining Isao Takahata's utilization of the animated medium in his creative works. My study delves into scrutinizing distinct attributes of his films, encompassing both the formal components related to cinematography and style, as well as the informal aspects related to his philosophy and the primary themes of his films. It dissects instances in which Takahata crafts openings for fantastical expressions, elucidating the purpose of these elements within the context of the given scenes and their seamless interplay with the film's realistic space-time continuum.The central exemplar for illustrating Takahata's incorporation of neorealism will be his film "Grave of the Fireflies," while "The Tale of Princess Kaguya" will be employed to delve into the more fantastical facets of his filmography. Throughout the analysis of these films, I will draw comparisons between their differences and similarities, thereby presenting a spectrum of formal features present in Takahata's oeuvre. The fundamental aim of this endeavor is to construct a coherent portrayal of how Takahata employs animation as a means to convey his concepts and perspectives on the world and humanity's place within it.By dissecting these phenomena, this thesis intends to uncover the reasons behind why the aforementioned films are inherently tied to the animated medium and, possibly, shed light on the enduring appeal of his creations, which continue to captivate and stimulate creators even in the present day.
